Your opinion- stick w/300D or get SonyA200
Hi, I'm new to photography but learn very quickly. I currently shoot with a Canon Digital Rebel 300D (yes, the one from five years ago), but am wondering if upgrading to the Sony Alpha A200 will produce better results. My girlfriend shoots with a Canon XTi and to me it's awesome - it is much faster, more up to date and produces prettier shots than my camera. The Sony is supposed to be better than her XTi, so rather than get one like hers, I figured I'd consider the Sony..

Here are a few shots for referencing my camera's quality:http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucky_money_cat/2721626828/http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucky_money_cat/2707792860/http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucky_money_cat/2707792162/.

The higher megapixel count is nice, and I'm sure the Sony will be a much quicker camera, but overall, for $500 do you guys and girls think upgrading to the Sony would be a smart move, or will the image quality be close enough between my 300D and the A200 where it's not worth it?.

I welcome any and all opinions. Thanks!..

Your pictures look good. Why change? All the new DSLR's are capable but the photographer is the one that makes the picture!!Nikon D60 18-55vr & 55-200vrSB400Casio Z750..

Excellent points. I'd say that if your girlfriend uses Canon, that's a pretty good reason for you to. Also, do you have any additional stuff for you 300D? Lenses, flash, etc. Does you budget cover a 450D?..

No..

Not enough to make a difference..

You as the photographer and post-processor have a much larger impact on image quality than the box that collects the image. I have a 6 year old Canon D60 and a 10 month old 40D. I could post pictures from each and you would have no way of knowing which camera took which pic without looking at the exif data..

Bottom line: Focusing on photography (lighting/composition/post-processing) rather than gear will produce better improvements...

There are distinct advantages to using the same camera family within, well, a family  Remember that any cost of lenses, flashes, etc could be used by both of you if you stay in the Canon area..

To me, the A200 vs XT isn't a very big difference...

Hi, thank you all for your opinions and feedback - it was really helpful to me while deciding what to do..

In case you guys care, I actually went ahead and got a Canon Rebel XSi. The Sony is OK, but I wasn't impressed with it in the store. Also, to get the lens I wanted for the 300D would have cost me $200 alone. That same lens, the 18-55mm, comes with the Image Stabilization and was included with the XSi, so I figured "what the heck!".

Thanks again for the recommendations (especially about keeping with the Canon stuff)!..

Congratulations and enjoy your new camera. I think you absolutely made the right choice. I think the performace of Canon is superior to Sony in most ways.Cheers, Craig..
