So, if I'm eating 800-1000 calories a day, which is WAY less than it takes to maintain my weight, why is it so important to be in ketosis? I am a newbie and in another thread I read someone mentioned something about even a crouton will throw you out of ketosis. Isn't eating such an extremely low number of calories enough to lose weight?.

Technically, yes. But being in ketosis means your body is burning it's fat for fuel, rather than using the carbohydrates you would otherwise be eating. This is what makes sure you are burning fat instead of muscle.

So it is not just the number of calories, but the source of the calories that matters. If you ate 800 cals of white bread every day, your body would not be likely to release it's fat.

So stick with it! It works!.

For me the giant benefit of Ketosis is drastically reduced cravings. I just couldn't do it otherwise..

It's a combination of both ... taking in fewer calories and being in ketosis. The calories can come from proteins, carbs, or fats. When you are in ketosis your body burns stored fat for energy. Otherwise it would just burn the excess carbs or even proteins I believe..

Oh and in case you ask, you can buy ketostix from your local Walgreens, CVS, etc to test for whether or not you are in ketosis.

NS says that Medifast induces a mild state of ketosis .... but when I do the test the label on the bottle indicates that i'm moderate to high ... *shrug*.

This is a great point! .

Though I still get hungry sometimes, especially during TOM, I don't have near the sugar/carb cravings that I usually do..

Keep in mind that you will burn muscle and fat while in ketosis. Most of our bodies (On MF) have significantly more fat available, so from a perspective of % fat vs. %muscle, it's much greater.

Ketosis isnt the smoking gun that promotes weight loss. Make no mistake, it is the stark calorie reduction. The benefits of ketosis, however, are to quell the sense of hunger, supplement your energy levels, etc..

To assume at the end of any diet/program you will burn 100% fat and 0% muscle would be very incorrect..

Just backing up what others said. I do not have the crazy sugar cravings I had before MF. In fact, I really don't have cravings of any kind except on the day before my period... but that is one day vs. a week-long chocolate and salt mania that I had before MF!.

My blood sugar levels are also stabilizing remarkably well... which, of course, has to do with the increased protein/decreased carbs..

Could not have said it better myself! If you will notice each Medifast meal contains protein as does the lean and green. Consuming protein with the carb helps slow down the metabolism of the carbs and prevents those wild blood sugar swings. This in turn helps ward off the hunger. Ketosis is a great sales pitch but Medifast has even stated it is "mild" on this plan. Losing weight will always come down to calories in vs. calories out.

Happy Melting..

Nora.
