The mystery of Medifast: Why do carbohydrates make us hungry?.

We stay on plan our and hunger adjusts itself to a somewhat normal/livable level. We add in additional carbohydrates, the hunger kicks in and the cravings appear. Why with additional carbohydrates is there an increase in hunger? Why with additional carbohydrates do cravings appear ?

Additional carbohydrates take you out of ketosis. Ketosis is a state where the body is burning fat for fuel, and in many people it suppresses hunger...

Me too! It is the mystery of medifast isnt it? When I reduce my carbs to medifast levels, that awful urge to snack all day(oral thing) goes down greatly. That, in itself, is more miraculous than I can express - it offers such hope...

Well, carbs also raise your blood sugar which raises insulin to bring down your blood sugar. The highs and lows of blood sugar make people hungry. Fat doesn't affect your blood sugar and protein minimally does...

I agree, happy! I find the less carbs I consume, even in maintenance, the better I do with cravings. once I get over a certain level of carbs, I am ravenous at least I know what my triggers are and how to outsmart them..

So it is the ketosis that reduces hunger which, I guess, is the same thing as low carbs reducing hunger. I get it. It is fascinating that it reduces appetite. I have a "why" brain and am SO curious why the appetite reduction. It seems that it is the cure for obesity/cravings.

Are there dangers of ketosis? Also, anyone know this: I went on Atkins and had MANY more cravings and more hunger than on medifast. Atkins, as you know, is lower in carbs, thus more of a ketosis state. You would think Atkins would be easer than medifast, but it wasn't nearly as easy for me..

It's an blood sugar for me. When I was on Weight watchers and eating lots of carby foods I was always hungry, always dizzy and always had headaches. It wasn't til I switched to Low carb and read the science behind it, that I realized all my woe's were due to the carbs. Earlier this year I did a religious fast where I could only have fruits, veggies, brown rice and beans. I had virtually no hunger after a couple days. I cheated ONCE at a funeral with a piece of white bread and within minutes I was ravenous! I know my body doesn't like carbs..

As the saying goes.......

I'm allergic to carbs, I break out in fat!..

For me, eating refined carbs (which I won't list here but you know what I am talking about) set off an eat sugar/want sugar thing that causes hypoglycemia ( the pancreas secreting insulin and dropping the blood sugar levels too low). When I get into that kind of cycle, the cravings are epic and I am an insatiable sugar seeking beast. Medifast has leveled all that out for me, taken away the cravings and given me the attitude that all those foods=NO!..
