Which will give me the best IQ for the money?
I don't care about any other feature but IQ, and low noise. Currently looking at a few camera. I can purchase them all for $300 new. My budget is $330Panasonic DMC-FZ30.

Panasonic LX1(will the LX2 go down in price now since the LX3 has been introduced? anyone know?)Canon G6(will the G5 at 200 new be a better choice)?Koniac Minolta A200.

Is there any other camera that is the same style with the same features as the Canon G6 or the Panasonic DMC-FZ30(i.e. manual focus and zoom rings) that is within my budget and has a quality that wont disappoint?.

I don't care much about zoom, size(although the size of the LX1 is nice). All I care about is the camera with the best IQ all around. Would like it to be good/nice at something around 2400 x 1920 without too much noise in everything but low light(I think that is asking too much)..

I have a Canon S2IS, and Leica Digilux 1 I got at a yard sale. As long the camera is marginally better than both the camera's I own I will be content. Will they be better than the Digilux 1?.

P.s. other than ebay and amazon what is another good site for pre-owned digital cameras? Thank you...

Any used DSLR like Nikon D40 or Pentax K100D will be much better than P&S cameras on your short list (owing to their much larger sensors)..

Here are the "rules" for buying a new camera:.

1. Buy the biggest piece of Silicon (ie, the sensor) you can afford.2. Buy the FEWEST number of pixels you can put up with.3. Buy the best lens(es) that you can afford.4. Buy the cheapest body you can put up with.5. Buy a camera that fits your hands.6.

Read the @#$%ing manual anyway!8. Ignore your friend's advice..

9. Find new friends who like you for something other than the brand of camera you use..

We need a sticky feature here and I would nominate this post for the top spot!.

And yes, what ajay said - if IQ and low noise are most important, there really is no option other than DSLR..

Well can someone point where I can purchase used dslr? That isn't amazon or ebay? So what would you guys recommend for a easy to use basic dslr? I want to go dslr but I feel it is more than I need. I just really want something better than my S2IS and Digilux1. thanks...

So he asks which camera is the best and you guys are suggesting he get a DSLR?..

Is IQ more than what you need? DSLRs are as easy to use as any other P&S camera (even easier). But the images may not look contrasty and sharp straight out of camera. Just adjust contrast and sharpness settings once to your taste and you are done..

My advice - Nikon D40 or Pentax K100D (in-body image stabilization). However if you still want to go for super- zoom camera (used) then your own S2IS is as good as others on your short list. So don't waste your money..

So would you say the S2IS is as good as lets say the newer G9 in IQ? How well does the Canon EOS 350(XT is it) compare to those models listed? What about Sony's DSLR are they any good compared to the others?.

So, what sites are there for the purchase of used dslr?..

I'm new at this, but I think the imgaing-resource site will help you make some comparisons. I've noticed that some of the cameras you listed are not specifically listed, so you might see if you can figure out if the sensors are the same (note they list specs of lots of cameras on their main page). They list models that are very close to those you listed..

One of the standard images I like to look at is the indoor and indoor flash image (which seems to use the same model in all pictures). Don't be too deceived by the D40 image. It seems to be a fairly poor representation of IQ for the D40. However, other images are good..

My wife has a Canon PowerShot G5 IS. It is a very nice camera. I think the IQ is very good (it is listed on the image-resource site so you can see some sample images). The image is perhaps a little too colorful, but that's just a matter of taste. On a camera like the D40 you can set the balance of image saturation by setting the color mode. By the way, my wife loves the pictures I get on my D80 (and I do too)..

Make sure you also check out the main page forhttp://www.imaging-resource.com. They have a bunch of resources to help you make a decision..

When you pick a camera make sure you take some time and actually hold the camera or a similar model in your hand. I think too many people are fascinated by the really small cameras, but these are very annoying to hold. Think how it might feel to take pictures at different angles and different situations (geee is my finger covering anything important?). I can go out w/ my D80 and take 300 pictures in an afternoon and it still feels great when I'm done. I've been using DSLR for about one month and am already nearing 3000 pictures. To me the feel of the camera was an important deciding factor.

If you want to get a D40 on e-bay (which is where I bought my D80) make sure you go with someone who is highly rated. If you are in the United States, you should probably make sure that you get a "US" market camera. Apparently Nikon will not service non US market cameras in the US. I purchase my camera from Cameta Camera. The cameras they sell are US market cameras that were factory demos. The demos are refurbished at Nikon and have been used very little (measured in shutter releases)..

Bodies (w/o the lens) for D40 go for about $280 to $320 (US$). If you figure in a memory card you can add $20-$30. Shippings about $25..

Cameras w/ an 18-55 mm (thats pretty wide angle to about 3x zoom) go from about $370 to $440. On the high end you would be purchasing a kit w/ a memory card (2Gig) and other goodies. That doesn't include shipping..

You should probably also get a UV filter to protect your lens (add $20)..

You might also check Craigs List, but make sure you get some recent picture files so that you can see how much the camera has been used..

Sorry about rambling on so long, but if you are like me, it was a big decision to get a DSLR. Before getting my D80, I used my wifes PS camera, but my camera was a Nikkormat EL which I purchased in the 1970's (which still takes great pictures btw). I had two lenses and one of them works well w/ my D80..

Now my kids want a DSLR (which is why I've been following the D40 prices)....

Good luck with your purchase. I know for me I have gotten way more enjoyment out of photography that I had ever anticipated when purchasing the D80...

I also forgot to mention that I worked a couple of extra jobs to get the D80. Gave up Father's Day, Birthday, and Christmas presents as well ..

G9 offers advanced controls required by advanced photographers. Under similar conditions and similar photographer both will yield similar IQ. G9 however has more resolution so images can be blown up to larger sizes for prints..

How well does the Canon EOS 350(XT is it) compare to those modelslisted? What about Sony's DSLR are they any good compared to theothers?.

It is also good. One of the largest selling DSLR of it's time..

Well, actually, the OP asked which camera would give him the best IQ for the money and Ajay recommended a couple of used DSLRs. Do you have some issue with that?.

I added a list that works for both dSLRs and those other cameras (whatever they are called). .

Sorry! Most of us ignored this p.s..

If you live in or close to a big city (you didn't tell us), try craigslist.com. That's the best place to get bargains on used stuff..

Well other than ebay and amazon as state in another post...

The OP is justifiably wary of used stuff on ebay (not sure about amazon)..

Craigslist may be a great place for cameras, but only for those who know what they are buying. There will usually be no warranties, no return policy. Will the OP be savvy enough to know how to test his camera and lens to make sure everything is ok? Just don't be conned..

Keh.com is a reputed website for used photographic products. And I found a number of D40 and D40x bodies there. They are also supposed to be very good in classifying their products and the BGN condition stuff is supposed to be in quite good condition as well as priced nicely. If I were buying a 2nd hand camera today, this would be the place I'd buy from. The customer service is also v good..

Hth the OP,AP..

Possibly? If you are interested in that camera, you should "research" other, comparable IQ cameras...like the Nikon 8800 and Sony F828 (just two examples). There were several SLR-like cameras in 2004 with 2/3" sensors and 8MP..
