If I was on the market for one and had $400, I'd get a Canon Powershot S5IS, but that's just me. 12X zoom. (I have the older S1IS and still like it.)JonGive me something to shoot..

Canon S3 IS can still be purchased new at B&H.com.I bought one for my wife, last Christmas, and she loves it..

Keep in mind, she had the choice of using a Canon 300D, Canon 10D, Canon 20D or Canon 30D. and she still prefers the S3 IS..

Smaller, lighter, fits in her purse and does a good job. Not as good as the others, obviously, but close enough for her purposes..

Canon S5 IS is another option. When I needed to pick one up, considering the prices at that time, I felt the S3 to be the better purchase..

This is in need of a translation: "Most respected camera ever made *according to oldfarmer and a handful of other dudes but pretty much no one else*.".

Pointing someone to a 2 megapixel camera that is overpriced due to an old cult status is terrible advice.  I know you like this camera but sheesh!..

Go to your local Ritz/Wolf Camera store and have them Ritz Express (ie.- order from the warehouse) a Panasonic Lumix FZ30!.

Image control:Zoom outZoom 100%Zoom inExpand AllOpen in new window.

Read about it here: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonicfz30/.

They have them brand new and on clearance for $322.99 (stock number 54-239-0687)..

Better hurry because they won't last long at that price (and they are not available on their website)..

There is no better camera with big zoom for under $400.period.end of story!.

I have an FZ50 (the newer version) and there is just nothing like these two cameras made by anyone else..

I've liked most of the recent ones with the exception of the Kodaks. The Panasonic FZ cameras (both sizes) are very good, as is the Canon SxIS series. You should be able to find most of these cameras (with the exception of the Panasonic FZ50) for less than $400..

My votes:- Panasonic FZ18- Canon S5IS- Panasonic FZ30.

Reasons for liking these cameras: Fast operation (very important!), good controls, nice extras (swivel LCD or wider angle). In my opinion they all deliver similar image quality, even if there are minor differences...

The FZ30/50 is the only one on that list that functions a lot like a DSLR where the other two are basically point and shoot cameras with long zoom lenses..

It has manual zoom and focus rings on the lens, separate dials for shutter speed and aperture as opposed to electric zoom and rocker switch/joystick focus and exposure adjustments..

And, the FZ30/50 has a larger imaging sensor..

All three of them are very nice cameras, however..

The FZ30 is much larger than the FZ18 or the S5IS..

Here are some side by sides I did of my FZ50 (same body as the FZ30) and the FZ18:.

Here it is next to a Nikon D40 so you can get an idea of the size of the FZ30/50..

To get similar lens coverage on the D40 you'll need the lens pictured above and this one:.

I agree totally with the FZ30 idea! That is truly a beautiful SLR wanna-be and rivals many $600 SLR cameras - and gotta love the optically stabilized Leica lens with manual control.~ The Real dj Tru ~.
