Which Cam should be my first
Hi there,.

As I am looking for a new digital camera, I just found this page. And all I gotta say, respect! So much information and efford you do put in it, very nice. As I said, I'm looking for a new camera cuz I'm planing to come to the US in March. I read a lot in te last couple days an learned a loot, too. I wasn't very interessted in taking pictures yet, but hey I need to take some pictures of Vegas, San Francisco and so on.Well, let's start with what I want:.

1. I want to take pictures of cities, people, sport events (so the camera should be fast) - by day and night.

2. The size of the camera should be around the size of a Panasonic DMC-FZ18, can be smaller, shouldn't be bigger. I'd love to be able the take it in a club, bar or somewhere else without a extra bag (but this is not a must). The DSLR, which my Dad owns with different telescopes and stuff, is defenetly to much to carry around as you can imagine.3. The price shouldn't be much higher than 500$..

4. I checked out 2 cameras and if I could mix them to one piece, that'd be perfect:First is the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18, which means I'd like to have theContinuous mode with no limits (except the capacity od the memory)a image stabilization system like it's MEGA O.I.S.

And it should be fast so I won't have much problems with sport shots or something like that..

The only reason for my doubts concerning this camera is the noise and blur when the pictures are taken, if it is kinda dark or laking light. I can't imagine, that this would work for pictures by night (in Vegas or at a party).

Second camera is the FujiFilm FinePix F31:the image quality, the sizeand the noise and/or blur up to ISO 800.

Would be perfect. (Together with my wishes above). If something like the "Natural Light & Flash-mode" would be in this camera, that's be fine, too. But this is not a must (again)..

But, as I read, the continuous mode ain't that good and it hasn't got any image stabilization system..

So could you guys help me out? Any ideas or recommendations? Thanks for your time reading this and maybe helping me finding a camera, Heiko.

PS: I am a real novice to the whole camera stuff. That might be good to know. Some automatics like "point and shoot" models have would be helpful. But I am willing to learn and so these automatics should be able to be switched off..

PPS: Please keep mispellings, these are my presents for you. But if you can't understand something, let me know. My english might not be the best, but I am from Germany and I bet that your German ain't better then my English. ..

I haven't decided, but I thought of the fuji. Great at higher ISO's. If you want to take pictures at high ISO, the Panasonic isn't your camera. You could better get the S5 IS, which is a bit better as far as I read and heard. That one has image stabilisation too, which the fuji lacks (thats why I don't take the fuji, because I think it will annoy me)...

What about the Canon Powershot SX100 IS? I guess it isn't better than the Powershot S5 IS, is it?..

I heard good stories about the S5IS, but I read some people advising the one you mention too. Maybe you should have a look at the fuji 8000fd. I looked at it today (only specs) and see it has image stabilisation. Combined with higher ISO's it might be your option (same as mine lol)..

Hi again,I've been to the local photo store and:- the Fuji S6500 is a little bit to big for what I wanted the camera.

- the salesman first offer was a PowerShot S2 for 250 / 368$ which is a pretty good deal here in Germany (couldn't find a better price even in the internet)- the S5 would be 390 / 573$,: would that be worth it?.

- asking for a G9 he told me that the G7 would be a little better and price wise would it be about 350 / 515.

So I guess i'd be going with the G7, especially because my Dad is supposed to have a external flash I could use with this camera..

Any comments or advises before I'll pic up the G7?Thanks guys fur your afford, not only in this thread...

Guten tag, Heiko! My German is certainly nowhere near as good as your English.  .

I bought the Fuji S8000fd about ten days/two weeks ago and have had good luck with it shooting wildlife (which moves as fast as sport events) in daylight. Haven't tried continuous shooting under low-light conditions as yet. But the S8000 does have the "Natural Light & Flash" mode you were asking about. That mode was useful for me yesterday, on the U.S. Thanksgiving, when I was shooting candid shots of family members indoors: some shots looked much better with the flash, some looked much better without..

Given what your interests are, I would definitely suggest taking a look at the S8000...

You can get a Panny FZ18 for $330 and a Fuji F20 for $150 at Amazon. Add memory and you are at not much over $500.  Then take whichever y9ou want for the situation that you will be in. Or both as the F20 doesn't add much if you are already taking the FZ18..

I have an FZ7 and F20 (and a dSLR but that is not what you are looking for) and I just bought the FZ18 to replace the FZ7 which will be sold. The F20 is with me all the time. The FZ gets taken when I don't need to or want to take the dSLR..

Well, of course I can get a Panny FZ18 for that price. But that would be in the USA. And I'm living in Germany. So if I'd get that camera in the US, I'd have to send it to the US for any warranty cases..

So, I did buy the Canon S5 because:1. I really like the handling of it. It's pretty easy and intuitive.2. My Dad has a external flash for his Canon Rebel which I can use now, too..

3. I'm hoping that there'll be a CHDK-firmware availible soon, so I can try shooting raw.

Thanks for your help guys..

Please keep us posted re: how you like your S5. I still have some time left to exchange my Fuji if I decide to do so, and am interested in hearing about the experiences of people whose needs seem similar to mine...
