First photo : automatic flash.

Second photo : slow sync fash.

The slow sync flash will allow ambient / background light to show in the photo. But to use slow sync flash, you must use a tripod (the second photo has an exposition time of 5 seconds).

I hope this help.Claude Carrier..

As you can see on this third photo, there was not enough lighe where the woman was. So the city is well exposed, but the woman is too dark. Slow sync flash allow both to be well exposed.

Thanks a lot. Now I fully understand why one picture is worth more than a thousand words, to say nothing of three pictures...

I had the same question, thanks a lot..

One thing though, since you have to make the lady stand still for 5 seconds there might be sharpness issues with the foreground, is this a place where a composite photo would solve this issue?..

The duration of the flash is very short, so the light reflected back from the flash is so brief that it doesn't show motion blur. The background that is reflecting ambient light is what will show motion blur without the tripod.Joannahttp://keemra.smugmug.com..

In this example, the only blur during the 5 second exposure would be around the edges of the lady's outline. That would probably be unnoticeable unless she changed portion (or even walked away) during the exposure..

Her face and features would be captured sharply by the flash which would have a very short duration (typically 1/1000 second or even shorter).By the way, I agree also that these are great examples.Regards,Peter..
