what words do Av and Tv represent?
I have a good understanding of Av (aperture priority) and Tv (shutter priority) modes, but I don't know what those acronyms stand for..

What words do 'A' and 'v' represent in Av?Is A aperture and v value?.

Similarly, what words do 'T' and 'v represent in Tv?Is T shutter and v value?.

Av = Aperture valueTv =Time value.

These are likely identified and explained in your Canon user manual...

Canon and Pentax still use Av and Tv, left over from the old APEX system that never really caught on. About the only APEX term in universal use is Ev. And *all* of those terms are rarely used correctly..

Hi Doug. Thanks for the additional info. I don't doubt that what you're saying is correct, but I'm glad I got an answer to my trivia question about what Av and Tv stand for..

For that matter, most people refer to the f/ratio or f/stop as aperture, when in fact it's only related to aperture (via focal length). There are plenty of common usage errors that we learn to live with and mostly understand enough to be able to use our cameras..

How right you are. My favourite is 'shutter speed'... since when was a fraction of a second a 'speed'? It's an interval of time... hence Tv, which is where we started....

Best wishesMike..

But whether these should be described as errors is debatable. For example, "shutter speed" is an accepted term in photography. A misnomer perhaps, but I wouldn't suggest anyone using the term is wrong to do so..

We also have such things as fast films and fast lenses, but they don't really move around at high velocity. Simply this is accepted as the conventional terminology.Regards,Peter..
