what makes more sense to buy? flash or lens
There's a deal at a local shop where I can get the 55-200VR lens for $150 (when purchased with D40). And I feel like I can't pass it up..

But, I'd like to get an external flash, too. If I had to pick, should I get an external flash or this 55-200VR lens? I don't think there's any special deal on the flash. As far as what flash to get - the SB400 is in my price range..

I'm leaning toward the lens since it's such a great deal (I think) - and pretty often at various events, I can't get as close as I'd like to my subject (family ceremonies, nature), so the higher zoom is very attractive..

But at the same time, I know how critical lighting is for quality of image and hence, a good flash..

I will ultimately get both, but I'm wondering what should I get first, if I had to pick...

Only you can answer this. Which do you need/want more?.

It sounds like you HAVE pretty much answered it: 'I can't get as close as I'd liketo my subject (family ceremonies, nature), so the higher zoom is veryattractive.'.

You haven't said that you are missing shots you would otherwise get because you don't have a better flash... since the D40 performs pretty well at ISO1600 you can often get away without an extrnal flash indoors anyway.

And $150 is indeed a very good price for that lens.....

I would get the lens. I believe as time goes on you will rather shoot avalible light as much as you can and leave the flash in the bag as much as you can.'The moment you think your great is the moment you quit learning.'http://www.gawalters.com..

Thanks, Mike and Garyw1!.

I just want to make sure I'm not making any rookie mistakes in my early purchase decisions. I'm price sensitive to say the least, and I just want to make sure my dollars go toward the most logical purchase..

I suspect that I can return it if I decide that I need the flash more, but I'd rather not go through that..

I'm also looking for any strong opinions for/against the 55-200VR. I've scanned the forums, but I'm curious what one would say about it in my particular context, being a newbie..

Another route I could go is ditch the kit lens and get the 18-135 (VR ?) lens, though I don't think there's a discount for that lens...

Here's a review from a respected site:.

... as you will see thay reckon it performs well and is good value for $300 (the normal full price)..

Best wishes.

The most use majority of flashes see is to act as a weight in the photographer's bag. Seriously, the flash will be used much less than a well chosen lens.Rationally I have no hope, irrationally I believe in miracles.Joni Mitchell..
