What is pixel-peeping
I have read this term many times as I read various forums. It seems actually to be a derogatory term in some cases..

What actually does it mean?.

Studying photos at very high resolution to find flaws that would be nigh-on invisible under normal viewing conditions..

Generally it seems to mean spending too long on arcane technical considerations instead of going out shooting and enjoying photography..

Before you buy a camera is the time to pixel-peep. Then when you buy a new camera, it's common to go through a period of comparing the new one with your old one. After that, forget the pixel-peeping and take pix..

Different things for different people. From my point of view it's when somebody buys an expensive DSLR, takes a couple of test shots, believes there is a "dead pixel" there and sends it back to get it fixed on warranty instead of taking great photos (and stamping that wee dead pixel out in Photoshop if there really is one)..

It can be an insult, but it is an activity that everyone does to varying degrees, and it is like so much in life, done in moderation it can be fun and educational; taken to extremes it becomes silly and even harmful to your photography..

There is nothing wrong with examining photos at the pixel level. Often differences in performance of most cameras cannot be distinguished even at that level. For evaluating lenses, pixel level judgements are often necessary. But most of the differences at the pixel level are tiny, and of very little significance to real life photography..

If one begins to base one's self concept on the superiority of your pixels as revealed by meticulous pixel peeping (as do some posters on forums such as this), likely one has developed a problem..

Nothing is enough for the man to whom nothing is enough...

And unlike some afflictions, there is no pill to cure it!.

Pixel peeping can be interesting. It is not a way of judging the merit of a photo or your equipment (in a away that is relevant to the real world)..

What it boils down to is - a difference that is not visible, is not a difference..

I wrote a little rant on this a while back, including come calculations on what pixel peepers are doing when they look at photos that close, and how unrealistic it is. Maybe you'd like to read it:.

Often a waste of time, but part of the job for pros...
