What camera does the Pro buy his girlfriend for Christams?
Hi,.

I'm having trouble finding the answer to the above question! The dilema is my girlfriend complains that I never take any "normal" photos lie when we have friends over, go to gigs and weekends away. The problem is since I turned pro I sometimes can't be arsed bringing the camera along haveing worked hard with it all week. But she has a point. It would be great to have a small camera to carry with her and I think it would make a good Christmas present. I was on the verge of getting the Leica D Lux 3 but there was too many negative comments left about it..

So, I've set a budget of 500. Can anybody tell me their recommendations for a good compact camera?.

Thanks,Shane.

Not exactly small, but I agree for a Pro, definitely a great option...

You buy her the camera she wants..

Just took a look at the G9 review. I know I will end up criticising any camera I buy !..

The one I can use (all) most of the time...

IF you can still find one to buy consider a Fuji F30 or F31fd..

I got an F30 for my wife and 12 year old daughter; they love it because of it's low light ability [fantastic for a shirt or pants pocket camera]..

PS I use it when I would rather Play Dad and/or Grandpap than photog. Like at a little after 3am when my grandaughter was bortn.RayRJNedimyer..

I highly agree with this. Ask her !!.

Last year I thought my wife of almost 30 years would like a camera of her own. She has assisted me in weddings, events, most all aspects of photography over the last 35 years. She often uses one of the D200's at events with great results..

When asked, she stated that she wanted something that she could pop into a pocket of pocketbook. She ended up with a Nikon L11..

When simply doccumenting our kids and pets around our world, that is what she likes to shoot. Fast and simple..

I have been informed however that once grandchildren arrive, she expects her own D300 or Fuji S5 ....

As stated before, ask. It is your best bet..

ENJOY !!..

1. I am certainly not a "Pro" (and, neither have I "stayed at a Holiday Inn", recently), but still tend to buy a lot of presents/gifts, .

2. I would either ask someone; and, if secrecy (surprise) is important would follow my own intuition, based on what I know about them, including things such as discussion at the link below, to give me specific ideals for what should be a hot item now,  .

Sexiest compact behind the lackluster, over priced DLUX 3. And afterall, sexy is what girlfriend presents are all about ..

I just realized that I might be confusing "classical range finder look" for sexy....I'm getting old......

Well, I'm 30 and I think that Rangefinders look cool!..

Havnt really looked into many compacts lately-yes the g9 looks like fun but not really a comapct-my missus has a nikon coolpix 4 meg and it is awesome. It take better images than my old s602pro. So there must be newer coolpix out there..

We came back from egypt and she had better looking images than me LOL.

But yes some of the leicas are nice...

Buy her a cardboard disposable and spend the rest on a new lens or gadget for yourself!http://www.antonyward.com..

Depending on your girlfriend's interest in bells and whistles, I'd give the G9 another nod, but if you want another option, consider the Canon A640. 10MP, only as sophisticated as you choose and great images. Less than $300 USD, perhaps close to $240..

Like a lot of pros, I don't haul my work gear to family events or fishing trips and selected this as my "car camera" to be at hand when the occasion arises..

Small enough to fit in a large shirt pocket, mine is usually in a spare Minolta meter pouch on my belt. Very good camera.jrbehmhttp://www.jeffbehm.com..

(Some) girls love slim, light and very pocketable cameras like the sony Txyz. I agree with the others, let her decide... You'll probably enjoy a new way to take pics, too.Cheers,Alessandrohttp://www.flickr.com/photos/alessandro_isnotaurelio/..

SMPhoto - I think you nailed it. It is not for me at the end of the day. And I know that I'll be disappointed with the G9 even if it is better than the Leica(I have a D3 on the way) .. plus we've been watching the new BBC documentary "The Genius of Photography" .. Leica's have been popping up all over the place and I keep banging on about their importance in photographic history .. so, she'll think she is getting the best ...

After all - isn't that what it's all about ??!.

Many folks on dpreview.com list their equipment here, but don't list any links to their images. Do they collect equipment? Or take pictures?..

Also look at the ricohs>.

GX-100 is rather special,.

R7 is very small for a travel zoom ( 28-200).

OT:.

I woudl rather take something else as a present..something which involves spending time together.. weekend out or something..

A camera has the risk that it looks like something you woudl like to have :/)..

Just checked out the Leice site to see how big they can up the D Lux 3 .. I downloaded this example (they are supposed to be showing this camera in it's best light!).

Then click on the performance proof at the bottom right hand side of page ...

Awful image..

Will probably get the weekend away for my present! .. she has specifically HINTED at the camera!.

Sounds like you will have a good christmas. And let's face it, how many prints are gonna be bigger than 8x10? Pixel peeping isn't really of value here. Making her feel she is worth the best....priceless. ..

It's not too bad if you stop at 50%....lol. Unfortunately the best images on that site are the ones OF the Dlux 3, gorgeous camera.... probably shot with Hassy 39, lol...

Wouldnt it be some craic to bring the camera back to the shop to complain that the 70-200 2.8 will not fit!!.

To make it more difficult! - I would like to buy a slim pocket size camera with a 28mm mm lens, minimum 7MP, twist and turn LCD, perfect crisp, vivid resolution, good zoom or higher MP to compensate, no noise, easy to handle (I'm getting old!) reasonable price - does it exist?.

Still have a mint condition Canon SLR EOS 650 film camera with Canon lenses, a Sony P1 (one of the first Sony digitals - brilliant) and a Konica-Minolta A200 (has everything including an electronic remote)...

...and then grab it from her to snap a shot here and there myself..
