want to purchase dslr
I am not a photographer, just someone who want to be able to make better pics than I get with my point & shoot. Son plays football & baseball. Thought I wanted a DSLR, but not sure I am qualfied to use one. Can a begginer make good pics with one. I really like the Olympus 410 & 510. Any suggestions ?

Sure you're qualified. It's not rocket science. It can be as complicated as you want to make it, but all modern DSLRs have simple mode setting which will do a lot of the thinking for you..

For football and baseball the Oly E510 twin-lens kit would be great; it comes with a nice telephoto lens as well as the standard zoom. Just turn the selector dial to 'sports' mode and the camera will make sure that the shutter speed is as fast as possible given the available light, to help freeze the action. If you are still getting blurred shots, turn up the ISO setting (sensitivity) which will allow the camera to use a faster shutter speed even in low light. That's it. Of course you can exert more control when you know what you are doing, but that will be a fine place to start. The rest is up to your skill in framing the shots and pressing the button at the right moment, which can only come with practice..

Best wishesMike..

Anyone can use a dSLR. Mastering it is an altogether different matter. Check with family and friends and see what they use. You might want to consider getting the same brand of camera as they have. Doing so would allow you to swap and borrow lenses and equipment..

The camera body (and brand) is important, but be sure to spend time researching lenses. Lenses will mean much more to the quality of photographs than the body itself. Get a nice zoom lens for sports photography, and a nice portrait lens that is fast (i.e. f/1.8 or so)..

I would recommend the Canon XTi, XSi, or 40D..

Are you prepared to study? If not, the snapshots you take in automatic modes probably will not be any better than you could get with a P&S. Photography involves a learning curve..

Yes, but the OP said he wanted to photograph football and baseball. There aren't a lot of P&S cameras that will provide the perspective and point-of-view a dSLR will. As for the learning curve, there isn't much more to know if you just want to capture snap shots. A dSLR will shoot just like a P&S in automatic mode. Creating images that evoke emotion and cause the viewer to do a double-take, yes that takes time..

And yet you still have the flexibility to be creative..

Olys are nice main difference is a smaller sensor and that makes for a smaller viewfinder..try the cameras and look through the viewfinders..

Oly fixed this with thier advance E3 model but the others sill have small VF..

If you want stablization, better lens selection, and larger viewfinder you can also look at Sony A100 or new A200.Ken - Happy A700 Ownerhttp://www.cascadephotoworks.com..
