Lumix DMC-TZ5Canon PowerShot SD870which one should I buy?.
Well, do you want a fairly large camera with a long zoom that does HD video (TZ5), or a very compact short zoom camera that does standard video (SD870)?.
If you can play with them in a store, you'll see they are quite different..
The TZ5 is more versatile, but bigger. The quality of the photos is probably not far off equal. About the only thing they have in common is the 28mm wide end of the lens..

You need to do some research and trying to handle cameras at a camera shop. No one can advise you with no information as to what you want to shoot..
There are customer reviews in the camera database...have you looked there?.
Not trying to be snippy here, just offering suggestions..

Totally different animals. I persobally prefer the TZ5, but it is substantially bigger..
I agree with the other posts about these being very different cameras. Plus, both Canon and Panasonic have other models that impress me just as much or more. But then I don't rely solely on customers reviews..
Well, I am at boulder, colorado which has some of the best scenes in the united states with green mountains and beautiful hiking cites and springs,.
And I want to buy a camera to record such pretty scenes and take general pics indoors but mostly outdoors with friends.
So which of the two cameras should I buy ? .
I am not a camera engineer and I cant afford buying a camera then returne it later, because I am not staying in boulder forever .
Thats why I relied on customer reviews, but both cameras are equally good as far as customer reviews are concerned.
Now I am asking you guys may be you can help me out to decide.
Thanks alot, sorry for bothering..
Andrew mapped out the essential differences between these cameras in the very first response to your question. Not only are the consumer reviews equal, for all practical purposes the image quality is equal as well. Pixelpeepers can split hairs about this aspect or that of the IQ. But most viewers will not notice any difference..
Which is why we have been stressing that these camera designs are different flavors. Those differences will give them a different feel in use. A bigger difference than hair splitting over the IQ. And which "feel" suits you better is entirely up to you..
I went through this same hard decision process in the last couple of weeks. I finally decided the 10X zoom feature of the Panasonic was important enough to me to make the choice. From the several reviews I studied and careful comparisons of the images They both seemed to be about equal in the image quality and the ease of use. Certain features of one or the other are desirable, but you will need to weigh your needs for yourself. I've only had my TZ5 for a day, but I believe I made the right decision for myself. Either camera would be a fine choice for the photos you plan. I live in Colorado and know the areas you are talking about.Panasonic DMC-TZ5A, Canon A95, Nikon 4800..
