URGENT: Best simple P&S - with best lens? best IQ? (1 image)
Hi,.

I use a D-LUX 3 when I need a P&S and am very happy with it, but my girlfriend wants to get her father a P&S that is VERY simple to use. He has big hands, so no wanky little controls please. And he really just wants to pull it out of his pocket and snap shots. Will never use RAW or do any post-processing..

We both want him to have the best lens and image quality possible for such a camera, and it would probably be best if it fit in his shirt, or at least in his jacket pocket..

Have been looking at the Ricoh Caplio R7, Lumix FX33 and TZ3, a Samsung and the Fuji F50 and F31 so far..

Really need help here as we want to get this, his 74th birthday present by Saturday morning..

Well, it sounds like you have to choose on or the other. Either a cam that will slip into a pocket, or a cam easy for big hands..

For a cam that can slip into a pocket, the easiest to use that I've found is the Olympus fe-280. It's 7mp I believe. It only has auto and scene modes but it does a great job and I find the image quality very good for such a small cam..

Maybe a Canon A570IS. Small enough to fit in a pocket, yet a nice hand grip. Canon's also seem to produce the best exposures without compensation or post-processing...

Fuji F40fd has sharp (best probably) 3x zoom with good IQ. I choice.Next up is Nikon S500/510..

The A570 is a good choice. I have one, it's an excellent camera. I bought it after reading a hugh number of reviews and postings about it. Excellent image quality. Small and easy to use. Larger that those sub-compact cameras with the itty-bitty tiny buttons. Yet the 570 is still small enough to easily carry...

If possible, why not take him to the store with you, so he can handle a few cameras and decide which one feels most comfortable to him. These things are so personal that I'd hate to choose for someone else...

That's what I was going to say ! .

Seriously - it's a good choice for a general purpose consumer camera. Enough of everything to keep most people happy. The A710 IS would have a little more, but most of that 'more' is not what you need..

If you want something bigger maybe the Canon S3 or S5 or the FZ8 or FZ18 ? They're like baby SLRs - bigger than a compact smaller than a DSLR..

Stick them all on 'auto' and they'll be fine..
