I only use Godaddy (unfortunately) for domain buying, so maybe it only applies to them, I'm not sure. But what's the difference between a domain that is already registered, yet available for back order, vs a domain that is simply "not available"? And is there an additional fee you can pay so that your own domains show up as "not available"?..

From my understanding the Godaddy system (resellers included) will only sell one backorder per domain name. If the domain backorder has been purchased by someone in their system it will display as "not available." Additionally if the domain is expired and available for purchase in the godaddy aftermarket the backorder will typically not be available. On their front of site search tool it will display "not available" but if you are inside of your account trying to apply a "backorder credit" it will tell you "the backorder has already been purchased for this domain."..

Does this mean someone can 'backorder' my domain without me having a say in the matter so when the 1 or 2 years I've paid for runs out it automatically goes to the person who 'backordered' it?..

No, as long as you continue to pay your registration fees you won't lose the domain...

Go with pool or snapnames. They will get domains before you or godaddy can. If you come across a domain that looks like this.

Eatingdisorders.com: The Leading Eating Disorders Site on the Net or weddingcatering.com or greeting.com fuck off. Dont even bother they are already owned by domainers like kevin ham or frank schilling.

Or if you scroll down or type in the adress bar and you get this company yeah.com that belongs to scott day , lets see who am I forgetting .cm belongs to kevin ham too.

Go over to sevenmile.com join the domaining section here or even better read this article about domains.

Kevin Ham Frank Schilling.

Hope that helps. You can use google and search Domain Dropping or Domain Catching..

"not available" just means it's registered for more than 1 year from that date. If it's less than a year to the domain name's expiration, they give you the option to backorder but don't do that, their backorder service sucks now...
