ultra compact with best macro
Hi folks,.

I'm looking to get a pocket camera that can take close-ups of plants, fungi, insects, etc. I understand that ultra compacts are usually compromised in such situations, but I've also seen very nice macro shots taken with the best of 'em. What makes/models of ultra compacts have the best macros?.

They all do fairly well really. I'd say a good way is to find one with other features you like and check the reviews on and They both do very detailed reviews including macro photo samples. I know that's not much help, but with small cameras they'll be fairly similar. Another way is to search the fuji/canon/sony/etc forums for macro photos and see what catches your eye. You can also take a memory card to a camera store, put it in some of the sample models and snap a few with different cameras to see which ones you like. Just a few thoughts, but I hope they help! duane...

Thanks, Duane. One thing I've noticed from testing a few cameras in shops is that, surprisingly, they actually differ quite a bit in macro quality. Casios, for example, are terrible. Some of the Sony ultra compacts have quite good macros but leave much to be desired in other areas. My old Canon s400 elph had a pretty good macro. Most recently I've been trying out a Panasonic FX30, which has many good features but the macro just can't get close enough.

Anyway, if anyone else has input, please fire away..

Have you looked at the Fuji Finepix F20? They do some nice macros, and it's a very inexpensive camera. Great in low light too. F40 does pretty well too..

I ended up buying the Canon SD850 and so far I'm really happy. It was a long process. First, I got a Panasonic Lumix FX30, but after playing with it a couple days I decided the macro just didn't cut it. The FX30 is sleek and cool looking, with an excellent movie mode and by far the easiest controls I encountered in my search, but the macro couldn't get the close-up detail I wanted. I exchanged it for a Sony T-100. The T-100 has an incredible macro; everything else about it sucked.

Yup, discovered a big ding on the underside that I hadn't seen in the store and realized I'd been sold a damaged camera. Took it back and got my money back and went to abother store, where I bought the Canon..

If you're in Seattle, check out Glazer's Photo. I got great customer service there and I'm really happy with my choice...

Cool! I'd love to see some of your shots! That stinks about the T-100. Looking at the website (just found it today) and did a side by side comparison with the T-100 and the SD850 macro shots and they both look great compared to some of the other ones. It seems I learned something about macro photography and pocket cameras! duane...
