Traveling and need advice about battery charging
I'm traveling to Australia from the US in a week and don't know if I need a power converter to charge my batteries or if an adapter will do..

The adapters are a few bucks but converters run $50+ and take up a lot more room in my luggage..

If it matters, the camera is the 40D and the batteries are whatever model is standard with that line. I forget the model # but can get it if it matters..

Does anyone have any experience and can confirm one way or the other?.

Thanks in advance!..

I'm in australia and have travelled to the US. unless your charger has a universal power supply, you will need a power converter as well as the adapter. i'm not a fan of power converters as I had one once and it blew up. i'd try to get a charger with a universal power supply and adapters, or, contact canon and see if you can get one before your trip... but do not plug it in until the matter is resolved. I blew up a pda dock in singapore once because the power supplies weren't compatible.

Hard to find, but they do exist!..

You run 100 Volts in the US, we run 240 in Australia..

Check the specs on your recharger; unless it is "universal" it will not work in Australia regardless of the shape of the pins (ie an adaptor) - in fact it might do worse than "not work" .

I don't know exactly what model you need, but Canon chargers run about $80-90 in Australia (which would be - what - about $60-70 US?). So you could, if you wanted to, wait until you get here and buy a "100% Australian" charger rather than an adaptor and/or converter. If you took that approach you might want to line it up first, or buy online - there's no guarantee a store will have it in stock although if you're flying in to Sydney or Melbourne I'd say you'd have a very high chance of locating one with a few phone calls..

Turn the Canon battery charger over and check the input specifications. It should say something like 100V-240V AC50/60Hz, which means its universal, and you can use it on 240V without a converter. You can buy an inexpensive plug adapter, and that should be all you need..

A lot of hotels will loan adapters; should you get stuck without an adapter, check the electric razor outlet in the hotel bathroom as many of these are configured to accept 2 prong plugs, and the source current is sufficient to charge batteries without worry..

In our part of the world, it is very common for portable electric devices to be "bilungual" - that is 110/240 Volt (and the corresponding AC frequency). This allows us to easily travel from the colonies to your part of the world .

I'd be surprised if it didn't work that way in your part of the world as well..

1. Google Australia and electricity supply - Answer 240 volts - 50Hz. the US is 120V - 60Hzhttp://www.kropla.com/electric2.htm.

2. Turn over your charger and read what it says on the underside. It will say 100-240 volts 50-60Hz. I don't have one but another Google search told me what it will say..

So you will need an adaptor that is all..

Strange that Cannon making a battery charger that will work all over the world when they sell cameras all over the world!.

P.S. The first Google search took me 5 seconds..

He signed up to DPR 1 week ago, and this might be his first trip outside the US. No surprise that most new US travelers have questions about power, as a minimum..

I suspect he knows how to do a Google search, but is looking for some direct feedback from fellow photogs..

Your post re. Google helps reinforce how easy it is to find information through simple web searches..

Yeah, I'm assuming a lot, I hope he has a great trip and his batteries are fully charged .

Doug,.

Yes I was being a bit abrasive! I am normally a pussycat with newbies but you will know as well as I do that you sometimes get some really misleadiing answers here and on other BBs..

It seems strange to me relying on advice from perfect strangers (advice which may be wrong) without even making an attempt to find the answer for myself. I search first and ask if I cannot find the answer..

Yeah, can't fault that approach at all. DPR posts can be less than 'correct'..
