Outside of a polarizer and UV, the only other filters I own are neutral density filters. I find them useful for shooting waterfalls, brightly lit snow scenes, etc..
I personally prefer the use of photoshop filters for things like softening and color because of the direct control I get...
Re: Suggestions for lens filters - graded ND filters? nt..
I'm guessing you are questioning the value of graded neutral density filters. Am I correct? Tom..
Except for a polarizer and a ND grey filter I've never had a real need for any other filters, but I had a few creative ones for fooling around.Really, the best six pack I can think of is one with whatever contains beer...

True to a certain age. After that your said six pack, becomes the natural nemesis of the abdominal six pack I once called my own..
Just to stay 'on topic', only have a polarizer so far. If I do get a decent lens one day will probably put a decent hood in front of it, rather than an UV filter..

Skip the UV and get a lens hood for protection..
Polarizer.
ND filters if you like to do waterfalls, or any other situation where you need longer exposures than the light allows..
Graduated ND filter.
If you insist on three more, get two more polarizers - one for each lens, and instead of one ND filter get two in different strengths..

??? Suggestions for lens filters besides UV for protection andPolarizer??? I'm a "serious" amateur with decent equipment (NikonD70s with 18-70 mm kit lens, Nkon 70-200 mm F 2.8 VR, and soon Nikon24-70 mm F 2.8). Indoor and outdoor photos. Scenery, nature, architecture. High school sports and stage productions (drama, chorus, band). Photos at professional meetings and conferences andlots of pictures inside classrooms. I've even agreed (admittedly, as"serious" amateur only) to take photos at a wedding in August 2008,)I'd be happy with a "six pack" of lens filters that are generallyuseful in multiple ways and avoid lens filters that are interestingnow and then but of limited general use.
