Stupid question about WB
What's the point of WB settings (or PP adjustment of White Balance of a RAW file) when one can use the color balance in PP? Doesn't it give the same results?.

Apparently not, and I'm curious to find out .

For example you do product photo, but light you are using is electric bulb with yellowish tint. You want product to be 100% natural. Then during RAW postprocessing you select subject that is white to adjust color for entire scene..

Here is image was corrected with WB tool in RAW converter. original was yellowish..

Other example: event shots where white shirt or dress should look white..

Here are examples:.

You could get the same result with colour balance but it would be difficult, take a lot of messing about and take time. But it is so much easier and less time consuming to adjust WB during RAW processing. It's even better to take a custom WB value before pressing the shutter - this way you know it is correct..

White balance adjusts color temperature. There are a couple of tints involved and they behave differently using WB adjust than they do using color balance. With white balance you might be sliding two or more tint controls in varying amounts. Depending on where you are on the WB scale, the relative amounts of the various tint controls used may change..

Using WB tends to follow how your eyes perceive color, using color balance tends to follow how the computer reproduces color...

I don't know details, but WB adjusting in RAW converter is easy as snap if you have reference point (white or perfect gray item, even tiny, which you can zoom and use as pointer point)http://www.stan-pustylnik.smugmug.com..

1) WB settings don't really make much sense from my point of view for several reasons:.

A) In real-life situations you frequently take pictures with mixed lighting of different color temperatures, so a certain setting wouldn't be exact;.

B) You don't always want the final picture to be WB 100% correct - you might rather want it to look pleasing to the eye and natural;.

2) PP adjustment of White Balance of a RAW file - definitely makes sense, because it is MUCH more precise and flexible than any WB adjustments which are possible to do with a jpg..

3) Color balance is not WB, sorry. No way it could produce the same results, not even close..
