...the hood will block the illumination. Check to see that there is not a shadow on your scene when using the flash in the camera, especially if your lens/hood extends as it is zoomed. Also, if you take macro photos, a hood may totally block getting any light on your (tiny) subject. Often, "macro" lenses have an internal "hood"....

As others have pointed out, the hood may cast a shadow when using the built-in flash, and may interfere with light & macros.You may also find it awkward when using a CP (Circular Polarizing) filter..

But in general, besides blocking stray light from hitting the front element, the hood also serves as a bumper when you brush up against things, and it keep grubby fingers farther away from the front elementWarm regards,DOF..
