If you go for the Nikon D40 go for one with a 2 lens kit. 18-55 and 55-200. You will be happy with this. I really like my D60 with the lens kits. JerryNikon D60 18-55vr & 55-200vrSB400Casio Z750..
I guess reading this thread would be of little use....

Go look at all of them before you decide. you can find anyone to tell you to buy anything you post. our opinions really DO NOT matter. it's your comfort level, money and interest in it all that need to make the decisions based on reviewing all of them and their features and hand feel. buy the one you like as there is no wrong answer...
Dig around and see if anyone is offering a D40 packaged with a 18-135. Its not too expensive of a lens, much better than a 18-55 and has a large zoom (7.5x in point and shoot terms)..
If you had $650+ you could pick up a 18-200VR if you gotta have crazy zoom factors and have money laying around..

I went from a super zoom Panasonic FZ10 to a Pentax SLR with one prime lens: 43mm..
Two years later, I have never bought a zoom lens. My longest reaching lens goes to 200mm, and I've never felt like I was missing anything. I went to Spain and Morocco last year and only took three prime lenses: 21mm, 43mm, and 70mm..
Your photos are what you make them. No lens, no matter what the zoom, is going to take fabulous photos: you are. I remember when I was worried about shooting at just one focal length, someone gave me great advice: you can always zoom with your feet .
Just go buy the camera that feels right to you, and get out there and find out just what that kit lens (and you!) can do .

Need to say very nice pictures, some of the best I have seen here.....
Thank you! The first one was from atop a camel and the last one was taken as I leaned out a bus window....
