rivals for SD700 (ixus800)?
I am about to replace my 5-year-old compact. My priorities are image quality, shutter lag, zoom capability and camera size/weight. And I know this is often considered odd, but I won't buy a camera without an optical viewfinder. I was all primed to buy either an SD450 or an ExilimZ750. Then I read a bit more about the SD700 and decided I was prepared to spend the extra $100 or so. Trouble is, it took me weeks of trawling through specs to narrow my cheapy list down to the above two. I dread doing it again! Can anyone offer me a shortcut and suggest a couple of rivals I ought to look at in more detail before parting with the cash?..

Look at the Canon SD550, it's image quality is better than the SD700. - Itai.

Ok- I am having the same debate with myself- do I buy the SD 700 because of the image stabilization or am I wasting money? I was looking at the SD 550 but I changed course when I found the IS feature on the SD700. Comments, please? The other camera I was sort of toyingwith is the Panasonic Lumix DMC FX07. Is that a contender? Thanks for any help...

Hi Lyn, It is a matter of needs. As an example, I love stabilization because I take tons of pictures in dimly lit environment, like deserted streets at night. Stabilization helps take pictures with lower shutter-speeds (or lower ISO) if you subjects are not moving. It only helps compensates for your movements. Forget about using it with taking pictures of toddlers, sports (unless the zoom is very long) or even portraits. As an ultra-compact with IS, the SD700 is probably among the top-choices.

Its battery also lasts much longer, has a more powerful flash and reacts faster. Despite of it's lack of IS, I kept one of those. - Itai.

Itai- Thank you so much for your help. This exactly the info I needed to help me make a choice. Fuji it is- Now I will start watching the prices. How big a memory card would you use? I know that is subjective. To give you an idea, I shot 700 photos on our recently trip to Italy/Belgium. I would love being able to put images on one card and be done with all the hassle.

We took a digital disposable with us on this last trip. Again, thank you. Lyn Clarke..

One 1 GB card gives you 600+ pictures but 15 min of high-quality video. Do the math based on your needs. Looks like 2 GB will be needed. - Itai.
