Resellerratings.com ?
I see a lot of posts with people looking for advice on the best places to buy cameras. The advice comes back to go to reputable B&M stores or online retailers with good track records. Three names that seem to come up the most are B&H, Amazon and Adorama. People are also advised to visit http://www.resellerratings.com. I went there myself for the first time today but am now a little confused. B&H gets a lifetime rating of 9.38 (out of 10).

And Amazon gets 6.17. Why are people advising us to use resellerratings and Amazon when resellerratings doesn't seem to rate Amazon very highly. What am I missing?..

I find that it is helpful to actually read the reviews. Often, a negative rating arises from miscommunication, rather than overall bad business practices..

There are over a thousand reviews for Amazon. How does it get a 6.17 rating and still get recommended by so many people? It doesn't add up...

1. Perhaps Amazon is slipping, but their 6-month rating is close to their lifetime rating..

2. I suspect that some of the complaints stem from not understanding the difference between Amazon and Amazon Marketplace..

3. You are better off dealing with Amazon online only, via their automated system. Trying to customize your shopping experience with hands-on interaction is not likely to be of benefit..

4. I have found them easy to deal with, if you follow the rules and read the screen information. There is potential for confusion and misunderstanding in dealing with such a large, complex and diversified entity..

Amazon is a different animal altogether. Many items bought through Amazon are sourced and fulfilled by 3rd party retailers who advertise on Amazon for the additional exposure they provide..

It's quite possible that many of the negative reviews that Amazon receives is aligned within specific market segments. Review sites like resellerratings, while very useful, don't differentiate between these different market sources within the Amazon umbrella..

Amazon is a tricky beast, because they have three tiers of selling:.

* they sell directly* they provide products from reputable sellers like Adorama* they provide products from unreputable no-name sellers.

Their ratings will not cover just their reliability for their own products, nor for the kinds of products usually discussed here which come from Adorama. They will include all those unsatisfying transactions with the no-name sellers of used or "discount" products. At least Amazon adds a reasonable guarantee on top of the third-party sales..

Personally, I haven't liked Adorama as a vendor either, but when I buy direct from Amazon, I've had no problems with delivery or return policies..

Resellerratings.com has been around for a very long time and is a trusted source for this type of information..

As has previously been explained, Amazon sells in different ways. When viewing an item at Amazon there is usually a link that says "[some number] used and new available from [some price]" and used deals available. If the item I'm considering isn't being supplied by Amazon I always check that link. Usually I can find the item supplied by Amazon directly..

Like others, I've had very good experiences when buying Amazon fulfilled items...

Bingo..

Amazon is where you buy directly from Amazon. Amazon ships your item..

Amazon Marketplace is where you buy "from Amazon", but your order is fulfilled from a 3rd party outfit. If you look close enough, you can usually tell if that's the case. But too many folks just see the price then click BUY without reading the fine print..

Not that AM is a bad thing, mind you. But with 37 bazillion 3rd party outfits involved, each with their own business practices and policies, there's bound to be problems..

Check out canogacamera.com...a rating of 9.92 lifetime and 10 for last 6 months. Although I use Amazon for many things, I use Canoga for cameras and lenses. Good prices, plus if you need help you can call and actually talk to someone who is knowledgeable about photography...

You really have to take sites like http://www.resellerratings.com with a grain of salt. Happy customers don't typically seek out internet resositorys to share their joy... On the other hand everyone that had a bad experience, especially those who are cronic bad experience shoppers want to tell their "woh is me" tales..

Then there is always the numbers issue, a business with 1000 complaints may have done business with 1,000,000 customers yet the business with 10 complaints only had 100 customers. Which would you rather do business with? the store with 1000 complaints in this example has 1 upset customer for every 1000 customers. The one with 10 complaints upsets 1 in every 10 customers......Dennis..
