Refurbed Cameras
What is your feelings regarding purchasing refurbed cameras? I have seen them on ebay...they say they still have factory warranties..

Should I shy away from these or is it a viable option?..

They do have factory warranties.but the warranty is not the same as a brand new camera warranty..

Personally, I'd stay away from refurbs..

Just because they just came out of the shop doesn't mean it won't have to go there again!.

And the refurb prices generally aren't that much better than a brand new price!.

I have bought them with zero problems. I picked up a factory refurbished Nikon D50 with just 27 clicks on the shutter..

I bought from an on line established retailer not Ebay. They go very quickly from such outlets so you have to be ready with the plastic the moment you see them..

I've never had qualms about buying refurbished products of any type. I must admit however that my one refurbished camera product, bought last June, died in just six months (but past the three month refurbished warranty) due to what the manufacturer calls hardware faults. I consider the cost to repair to be prohibitive, but I've gained three useful paperweights with a dead body and two orphaned lenses. I know that nothing is perfect, and any productused, refurbished, or newcan develop a fault, but, like J. D., I'll likely stay away from refurbished cameras in the future...

Many "refurbs" are actually just returns. A store can't sell a returned item as new so they go back to the factory are checked and sold as refurbs. Why would somebody do this? Picture somebody getting a camera from brand B and they want brand Z because that is what everyone else has..

I bought a "demo" camera from Cameta on Ebay and it had 0 problems. It was about 150 bucks cheaper then the new camera..

Look at what the real cost is and then decided if you want a refurb. See exactly what the difference, if any, are for a new vs refurb. Also see if you can get an extended warrentyyou may still come out ahead in cost..

Thanks for the replies...it seems (as I kind of expected) to be a gamble. What/where are these factory outlets you speak of?..

Of course, buying a new camera is also something of a gamble. We won't even talk about getting married and other gambles..

Being cheap, I like refurbished products. My guess is that the refurb is usually electronic in cameras now and I would buy one without much concern..

To me it would be like buying a camera off the assembly line that actually went to a team of technicians for a final check and tune-up before shipping.Patrick T. KellyOaxaca, Mexico..

That depends on where you are. They are full manufacturer warranties up here in Canada. I bought a refurbished 1DIIN that had the full Canon warranty. And the price was well worth it at the time for me too..

It's going to come down to where you are and how reputable the dealer is..

To me (and I work in the camera sales business), refurbs aren't cameras that just happened to be checked out by technicians, but are cameras that had a defect after already being purchaced by someone..

They could have had it one day.one week.one month.six months.you'll never know!.

My take on refurbs.they are used cameras that have already had open heart surgery and have a pacemaker in place!.

As for someone above saying that refurbs are returned cameras.not true..

Returns are sold to these online websites that so many here cherish for their low prices and are sold as new..

The store I work at sells our returned items to online retailers.so those low internet prices aren't always what they seem, either..

Cameta is on Ebay. The demo that I got was an Oly E500 with the full factory warrenty and I actually purchased an extended warrenty. I didn't have any problem with the camera at all. I was a little leary at first but I would buy from them again. There customer service and communication was good and the price was fair..

Yes.but a demo model is not a refurb, and a demo still comes with the standard manufacturer warranty as it is still a brand new, never been sold camera, despite the fact that it was used in a showroom..

Actually, demo models are not bad and I like to sell them..

With a demo model you pretty much know that you won't have a defective camera since it would have shown it's defect while on display..

What constitutes a refurb?.

Any decent seller will tell you. This is an example from my source:.

You will note that, contrary to assertions above, it is not necessarily the case that the item was returned defective..

This is what the same site says to urge you to buy:.

I guess it is a question of which salesman you want to believe!.

You have no way of knowing how many shutter clicks are on a refurb. The count can be, "reset in the Service department if certain parts are replacedor other operations are performed."as Nikon describes here:.

Thats right.just like how can you believe that what Jessop's says is true?.

Refurbs are just that.factory refurbished due to defects..

Jessop's claims that refurbs are more trustworthy than brand new, never opened cameras..

If you want to believe that.then go right ahead!.

Of course, they are salespeople too.and guess what.they want to sell you refurbs!.

In the UK we have laws that prevent people from lying in advertising material etc. Jessops is a reputable national chain whose only fault is that they are not aggressive enough in their pricing..

Refurbs are just that.factory refurbished due to defects..

I prefer to rely on the written word of a reputable dealer for my decision making..

Jessop's claims that refurbs are more trustworthy than brand new, never opened cameras..

I presented a balanced picture. Of course there is a sales pitch in the 2nd link. Bulldozer tactics of pouring scorn on everbody that disagrees with you does you no favours..

Of course, they are salespeople too.and guess what.theywant to sell you refurbs!.

I think I had worked that out..
