reformatting 128mb compactflash
I tried deleting all images on my CF on my Mac. Now I can't get the CF to work in my Canon PowerShot A50. The camera says there are images on the card, but I cannot view them, or use the camera with this CF in it. I think I have to reformat the CF. I don't mind losing the images. How do I reformat the CF?..

Check the manual for your Powershot. It will explain how, otherwise, go to your local camera shop. NOTE: Only format your CF in your camera, never from your PC/MAC. The camera has to write to it, the computer only needs to read...

Nancy, Did you format your card before using it (or plug it in and snap photos???), if not you may have messed up your card. I understand that they like to be formated to the device before usage, or it may corrupt them. Although my camera uses Smartmedia cards, I know that my manufacturer has a GIANT WARNING in the manual about formatting the cards before use. I don't know for sure, but I bet there is a Canon web site that may be able to answer your technical inquiry. Good Luck Mike..

You can reformat it on a PC in NONFAT32 format and it should work again. I have no idea how to do that on Mac. I never delete from the computer or format always reformat in camera...

You have discovered one of the rules that camera manufacturers do not make clear in their manuals. Format image cards using the cameras menu driven utility. I damaged an old Coolpix 100 by formatting it using a Mac. The format on most CompactFlash cards (up to 1Gb) is FAT-16, a Windows format. ALWAYS use the utility on the camera to delete or format your CompactFlash (or any others for that matter) cards. First thing to try is the on board format utility.

Good luck, David..
