A personal favourite is Hans-Michael Koetzle's Photo Icons (Taschen)...
Sometimes you actually have to go to the bopokstore..
Compilation books are organized by time great photos of the 1930s,.
Or organizzed by topic great fashion photos.
Or by individual phbiotographers (real book) Photo Nomad, by David Douglas Duncan..
Or by nation great phtographers of Italy.
I've been in the book business and it certainly would be hard work to co0v ered a century, with photographers from every nation and every genre..
So, your best bet is to go to the store (or severalstores) and look for yourself..
I'm probably missing something really obvious but can anyone recommendsuch a book??.
Don't buy just one - go to your local library and you should find one or more books by each of them!.

In keeping with most replies on this forum I will not answer the question asked. Save your money and visit the Magnum site athttp://www.magnumphotos.comand just look at the myriad of photos there. It's a treat..
I don't know where you live in the Uk but in London there used to be a great photography book shop I Charing Cross road but sadly I think it has gone now, so that's not much help either is it. Lol..
My wife and I rarely buy photograhers book because they are expensive, take up space and collect dust once you've looked through them a few times. But do check out the magnum site, you can't get much better.Jules.
Why can't you blow bubbles with chewing gum?..
Another good site ishttp://www.loc.gov/rr/print/catalog.html - especially if you are in the US or are interested in it's history...
