Rebel vs 40D
I purchased my first DSLR,a Rebel XT approx 2 years ago. I am now looking to upgrade and need some guidance. My choices are either the new Rebel XSI or the 40D? Any and all opinions would be appreciated...

Where do you feel the XT is falling short, what are you looking to improve? That may point to somethng that one or the other does somewhat better (or not)? There is a size and weight difference to consider as well. I've seen some grumpy posts on other forums discussing ways the Xsi has pushed ahead of the D40 (I'm not about to switch to Canon so haven't paid too much attention to them)...

I have been pretty well pleased with my XT but looking now to advance on what I have learned. I am looking for something that I can continue to grow with that has more advanced features. A friend of mine who is a advanced photographer wants me to select the D40 but I wanted other opinions. According to the reviews I have read the XSI is quite an improvement over the prior models. I ran into a problem recently on a trip to Maui while whale watching. The XTs burst rate was just too slow.

Your point on the camera weight is well taken as I have relatively small hands and the D40 seems quite large in comparision.

Thank you for your time in responding...

I don't know that the burst rate is substantially different for the Xsi compared to earlier Rebels. The 40D is 6.5 fps. Here's an earlier comparison, there may be more recent comparisons but I doubt any of the technical numbers have changed, there may be more analysis of actual shooting results, "noise," etc. The Xsi will use different memory (I think) but cards aren't all that expensive these days. You may also want to consider which other accessories might or might not carry forward from what you have. That may make the price differential less a consideration...

...there's little practical difference between the two. Minor difference in feature-set, the big difference is in price. I suspect that the viewfinder coverage is a little better on the 40d and it has craw, plus it has a bigger frame and high and low-speed continuous shooting modes. Plus the 40d shoots cf and the 450 is SD now. I just tried a 40d this weekend and wasn't all that impressed with it. It's not bad, not all that great either.

But such is life. the biggest difference for me would be the ISO1600 limit of the rebel...

Sorry, I thought I'd included the comparison link. There has been a fair amount of discussion on forums like Dpreview discussing the differences and that in some ways, the Xsi leapfrogged the 40D. The advantage to checking some of the forum discussions is that there will have been some user input beynd just cheking the numbers as this was an early comparison...

I recently bought an Xsi and did a lot of research. I decided against the 40D for size reasons only - realizing there are differences that make the 40D much closer to a pro model like weather proofing, higher burst rate, metal, metal, metal and compatability with the pro-type accessories like wireless flash/release, etc. I just wanted a light, quick DSLR that had some great features where I could keep my investment in canon mount lenses. I can get a 50D sometime down the road (with my wife's permission, of course).....
