Question...
A friend of mine is looking to buy a new DSLR, but has some questions..

He has have drawn up a list of features and basically the cameras that fit the bill are these.....

Canon EOS 40D.

Olympus E-510.

The thing is, given that these two cameras seem to have the same features and capabilites, why is there such a huge price difference with the Olympus being half the price of the Canon?.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think it's strange?.

Try comparing the Pentax to a Canon Digital Rebel XTi..

Canon has lots of models, some of which are, perhaps, sturdier, than others, and Canon prices it's products for optimum sales high prices to make lots of money, but low enough to attract customers..

The sensor is one of the most expensive parts of a camera. The sensor in the Canon is 25% larger than the sensor in the Olympus. A larger sensor requires larger lenses, which weigh and cost more. Canon sells more cameras than Olympus, which results in a lower manufacturing cost, but Canon's business model seems to require higher profits than Olympus..

Use the 400D (XTi) as the Canon model to compare to the E-510. The Canon 40D is a higher model than the entry level XTi due to build (metal body vs plastic), fps (6.5 vs 3) and max shutter speed (1/8000 vs 1/4000). However, the E-510 is plastic, 3fps, and has a max shutter speed of 1/4000 just like the XTi...

1. Not sure why you friend is not posting this for himself.2. The street price difference is about 30% less..

3. Your friend is comparing a Masarati to a Ford (and not even the same model in the range). Both have four wheels, a gear box and an engine. But there the similarity ends..

4. If your friend visited the car showroom he would immediately appreciate the difference although to be honest it stands out a mile on the papers specs..

5. I suggest you friend does a lot more reading before investing in a camera system..
