PowerShot A85
My 4 or 5 year old PowerShot A85 stopped taking pictures or showing any image in the screen in shoot mode. It will show previously taken pics in playback, and the menu settings show up around the perimeter of the screen so I assume there is nothing wrong with the screen itself. Batteries are fine. Any idea why it's stopped taking photos? If it's a dead camera, what do you recommend as a replacement for which I can get a waterproof housing for deep scuba use?..

Looks like you're having the exact same problem that I'm having with my ZR-60 camcorder: the CCD's wiring has come loose on your camera. It's a known problem and Canon will fix it for free, even for cameras outside of their warranty period. Check out Canon's official statement about it here:

Thank you for the lead to what might be the problem. Does your camcorder record images though? My camera doesn't, but the LCD does show, in playback mode, pictures previously taken and still on the card. Thanks again...

My camcorder doesn't record images anymore now that the problem started occurring. Like your camera, mine shows previously-recorded video and it shows menu items on the screen properly, so the screen is fine. It's basically as if there is something completely blocking out the lens from seeing anything (in this case, that would be the wiring). I sent mine in for servicing a few days ago so I'll be getting it back sometime within the next few days. I'll let you know how it goes...

Great! Thank you. Before this the camera worked fine and I hate to replace it because I also have the waterproof housing for scuba diving. If I get a new camera, I have to get a new housing, which costs about as much as the camera itself...

Hi Bob. I got my camcorder back yesterday and it works fine now. I had to pay to ship it to Canon's repair shop, but the repair and return shipping were free...

I sent my A85 in and also received it back within 10 days or so after sending. I didn't even have to pay shipping because Canon emailed a UPS label. I highly compliment Canon customer service for fixing the problem, at no charge, even several years after the warranty expired. My customer telephone service call was answered very quickly (by a native American English speaker, no less!) and the follow-up email with a shipping label arrived when the customer service rep said it would. I received emails letting me know the camera had arrived, then one saying they would fix it free, and a third letting me know they had shipped it back. Canon customer service rocks!! I wouldn't hesitate buying another product from them.

I have a Canon Pixma copier/printer/scanner that works very well.)..
