polarizer filters front threads or not???
I am about to purchase a polarizer and want to know if it is a big deal or not whether there are front threads on it. Is a polarizer something you'd leave on a camera for any extended amt of time or take it right off so the front threads don't matter. Thanks!StephanieEphesians 5:19-20.

I have never put anything in front of a polarizer. It cuts too much light to leave on my lens for any length of time. I put it on for a shot then take it right off..

I have used tele-converters and wide-angle converters in front of my polarizer, so I recommend getting threads in front "just in case".Dave..

I can envision some scenarios while shooting landscapes where I might want to add something on top of a polarizer but it's a rather limited set of circumstances. I recall some waterfall shots where I wanted both polarization and some added ND - if I put the PL on and then saw I still needed some density, the rings would allow adding the ND. For the most part, the PL is by itself. The rings would be used if adding a filter holder for a grad ND..

I don't know that it's a deal breaker. Rings will likely add some thickness so if needing the thinnest possible rig stack for use with really wde angles, maybe you should pass on them. Otherwise, I think I'd want them..

Something that's a little more pedestrian is that without rings, you can't easily use a snapcap...

I already had a front type teleconverter (oly tcon-17) for a P&S so tried it with a DSLR, here's a with & without comparison:.

Image control:Zoom outZoom 100%Zoom inExpand AllOpen in new window.

There is a very minor light loss due to extra glass surfaces. The results are very good, converting this lens to a sharp 230mm f/2.8..
