Please help with lenses
All right, I have read everything and I am stll confused. I am going to purchase either a Nikon D40X or the D80. What would be the best all around lens for me. I would like to stay at or under $400.00. I looked at the 18-135, but I am concerned that it does not have the VR. Should I worry about that?.

I also would like to be able to catch some good shots on the soccer field. Does anyone have an opionion on the 55-200VR...

VR is nice... but remember, photography has gotten by for 150 years without it...

I have one 18-200 that is always with me along with a D200 and I love it. This is really an all around lens..

I think the 18-200 costs a little more than $400 even there in the US, but think about it, because if you choose the 18-135 you will miss the zoom and if you choose the 55-200 you miss a a lot the wide-angle. Are you shure you can't afford the 18-200? Think about it and listen to other opinions..

True, but people take photographs with VR every day that wouldn't be possible otherwise...

If you have a good camera store nearby you would probably benefit from some hands on experience..

Try using the two cameras with different lenses to see how they feel to you. If you bring your own sd card you can even take your in store shots home with you and inspect them at your leisure, looking for optical quality as well as your ability to handhold at long zooms..

The d80 and d40x are fine cameras. I chose the d40x for it's smaller bulk with the benefit of saving a bit of money. I combined it with the 18 to 135 but I won't often be trying to read the markings on a soccer ball from the top of the stands. ..
