pictures look dark on my monitor
Hello everyone,.

I just purchased a Canon 40d with a Tamron 28-300 vc lens. Before this I had a kodak 6.1 P&S camera and I did not have this problem with my monitor. I have an older CRT monitor with Windows 98 media and photoshop elements 5. I took a few pictures at the zoo of some animals and downloaded them onto my computer. Some of the pictures look really dark on the monitor to the point where I couldn't even make out the image but the images looked fine on the cameras LCD and the histograms also looked ok. I decided to just print one out to see what it looked like, it looked good. Could anyone help me with this problem? By the way I love my 40d!!!...

Since your histogram looks okay, I reckon you can either calibrate your monitor or just get a new one.Androo

Thanks for your reply. Can you tell me why the monitor worked ok with my 6.1 mp camera but not with my 40d camera?..

Your dslr might have an lcd brightness setting that is set high or your monitor brightness could be set too low. You could also post a picture to rule out the exposure being off. If you don't get any other responses you could try posting in the PC Talk forum...

You should get your monitor calibrated, or at the very least, adjust the brightness and contrast settings. Since you mentioned you have an older CRT, your monitor may be worn out. I had a 10 year old CRT that I had to replace a few years ago because it had slowly dimmed over time. When I got a brand new LCD I was blown away...

Thanks for all the replies. Can someone tell me how to go about changing the brightness on my CRT? And any suggestions on what model of monitor to get? I really don't know a lot about setting up computers ect... If I need to get a new one it would be really nice to just plug it in and go! I have read a lot of talk about getting a monitor that is easy to calibrate (don't know how to do that) Most of my time on the computer is editing and printing my pictures. I am willing to spend $200.00 - $300.00 on a monitor. Thanks for all your help! these forums are great!..

On my monitor I right click on the desktop/settings tab/advanced button/color tab to get to the brightness and contrast controls. Without a calibrated monitor and print profile your prints may not match your monitor as to color and brightness. You can find out more about this by searching on the topic "color management"..

My monitor is not calibrated (the software is too expensive $250 + altho there is cheaper software that gets mixed results) and I print at Costco. I use Lightroom and have to increase the exposure to get a print that is close to what I see on my monitor..

If you don't get any recommendations on monitors you can check the PC or Mac Talk Forums...
