Photoshop?
I can get a full licence for photoshop CS3 through my school for $173. Worth it? I haven't really used photoshop for a few years, and I didn't really do anything with it. But i'm getting a G9 for christmas, and wanted to shoot some things in RAW and start experimenting with post processing. I think I've got composition down (at least somewhat...take a look at my flickr page and let me know if i'm wrong about that), and wanted to move to the next level, so to speak. I could also get photoshop elements for $33 or lightroom for $45...whats the best route to go. I have the money for any of them, thats not really an issue.

If you can get the full version for $173 go for it. I assume Design Premium is one step down? If so, for $14 more get the full version, even if you don't need it's full power right now..

Design Premium actually includes:.

Adobe InDesign CS3Adobe Photoshop CS3 ExtendedAdobe Illustrator CS3Adobe Flash CS3 ProfessionalAdobe Dreamweaver CS3Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional.

No idea what half those programs do... odd that the extended version plus all that other stuff is cheaper, I know... but obviously the better deal. $173 for photoshop is for faculty I think...hence the higher price... Design Premium is about $350 if your not a student.Chris Purcell.

I just did some checking and Design Premium is $1800.00.

I find it hard to believe that even with a student discount you get it for $159..

Not sure if that crazy link will work or not... but yeah, it's only $159.43. Hence why large public schools are great!Chris Purcell.

I can also get Corel Paint Shop Pro for $5.... so what do you think I should get?Chris Purcell.

Your choice is $1800 worth of software that is used extensively in the business world for $159.

Or a niche program that is virtually non-existant in the business world for $5.00.

Figure what benefits you most - software access or saving money. What are you studying, what do you want to do? Anything that involves some sort of digital creativity will benefit from the Adobe Suite. Web design, publishing, graphic arts, photography, etc. I'd be all over that $159 deal, but I use most of those apps to begin with..

What do I want to do? Well... I'm going to grad school to get my PHD in geophysics... so nothing that involves digital creativity I suppose. I want to learn how to process my photos effectively and well. I don't know that I would use any of the other programs besides photoshop... but a single copy of photoshop would cost me $173 versus $159 for this collection.

Illustrator is a vector based drawing program.

InDesign is desktop publishing.

Acrobat is the ability to creat portable document format files (PDFs) - this app has use in virtually every line of work..

Dreamweaver is web design.

Flash is again mostly web related..

If money is not an issue, I would get CS3. If you want to save money, then get elements, since it does about 90% of what CS3 does, and the 10% it does not do is not something that many individuals need. If you don't plan on batch processing, creating/running actions (basically macros), or use curves, I would save the money and get elements..

However, the deal that you are getting is great. To get all the other programs definitely makes it worth it for me. However, if you never use or need the other programs, it may be a waste for you...

Yeah, and part of me would consider that...but I would have to pay full retail for elements. I enjoy getting a good deal sometimes, you know? I think I am going to go pick up a copy of CS3 tommorow...so now my next question... any good websites (free) for photoshop advice? You know, white balance, saturation, sharpening, file conversion, ect. I'm fairly computer literate, and used a copy for a bit 3 or 4 years ago on a friends computer...so even something a little more advanced would be nice....

Thanks for the sites, I just picked up Design Premium and a free copy of Leopard today....

And yes, everyone still chants "Penn State Sucks" at all sporting events....and the O is as filthy and delicious as ever...they now have a police officer in the place and charge a 10% "security surcharge" after 9pm....

For 10 bucks Lightroom preforms better than Elements for me anyway. Elements has alot of scrapbook kind of gagets, but I didn't see any flower borders around your shots at flickr. I have only used both as free downloads and read what some of the pros have to say, and if you want it all, you can do almost anything, you need PS basic or full version. Your in a great position don't settle for junk, while the rest of us are calling the school for a job to get that deal.Tim..

Mmmm 'O' fries...well, there were good at 4am at least. But 10% more means the 16" pizza is now $3.30 (well, it was $2.99 when I went there, but that was a long, long time ago)...

They had the audacity to raise the price for a pizza up to $7.50 at one point! They learned their lesson eventually and dropped it down to $5 something....it was $4.99 when I was a freshman...not a bad price..

Re>Would any of these other programs be useful? <.

First, figure out if you have enough computer power and hard drive space to hold these programs..

If that's OK, ... a lot of scientists seem to make presentations, send reports to othr scientists, run web sites showing off their research, and so on..

For the prices, this stuff can't be beat. Just getting Acrobat for $159 makes everything else "free.".

But if all you want is nicer photos, get Photoshop Elements..

BAK..

Yeah, I picked up the whole package and installed it all. So we will see if I end up using any of the other programs....
