photoshop question!
Hey guys! I am a bit new to photoshop. I havea couple of questions. How can I make make an image black and white but retain the color on some..

AN example would be the attached picture. I want to make everything black and white and retain the color pf the lamp..

If anyone could give me a step by step process, it would be great. Thanks!.

P.s. I have the photoshop CS version if that helps..

Thanks!.

What you want to do is layer maskingHere is a link that will walk you through ithttp://www.larry-bolch.com/mask-intro/.

If your a real beginner and do not know how to adjust saturation levels click Ctrl UThe layers pallet is under window or F7as that step is missing in the link.

Then it should look something like this.

Image control:Zoom outZoom 100%Zoom inExpand AllOpen in new window.

I used a different technique then in the link but that should work well for beginners.I used a gradient map instead of desaturate.I did this in about 2 minutes so edges might be a bit rough.

Here is my take at it! it's not much, and the edges are a bit off, but it's great!.

To tell you the truth, it's only my second time opening photoshop. I usually just use picture project for the basic pp stuff..

Off topic here, but how come I cant seem to open raw file (*.nef) in ps?.

Thanks again. I learned something new today. I am a happy man!.

Nothing is off topic...it's YOUR thread!.

You probably need to upgrade ACR. I think CS will accept the latest version? It's free from the Adobe site....

If you can not open your raw files your in need of an update..

In photoshop click help> updates and update it all or just the latest camera raw update.Or you can go herehttp://www.adobe.com/...downloads/product.jsp?platform=windows&product=39The support version 5 through CS3.

If your not sure what version you have click help> about photoshop.

What camera are you using?.

Thanks! I'm really hooked now, and want to try the different tricks photoshop offers!.

Pictures were taken with a Nikon D1H, 28-80 mm f/3.3-5.6, Sigma EF-500 Dg ST flash, and vivitar tripod!..

And there are lots of great things to do in photo shop.I even learn new things I never knew photoshop could do.Wow a D1H, your shooting with like one of the 1st DSLR's from NikonWell despite it being an oldie you still get nice pics Sparky_caGo take photos ..

The D1H has amazing output. It's a 2.75 megapixel camera, but that's more than enough for website use (and magazines up to a full page...a spread is pushing it)..

Ya gotta laugh at people who buy a 10 megapixel camera and only use the images for e-mail and prints no larger than 8x10. They're probably the same people who buy an Expedition to drive to the 7/11 around the corner...
