Photos From Helicopter
A friend and I are taking a helicopter tour of Los Angeles this upcoming weekend. I will be bringing my D200 with 18-200 zoom with vibration reduction..

I haven't been in a chopper since I was 11. Will I be ok with the VR or does the helicopter have a lot of vibration that I need to worry about, especially for shots with a longer focal length? Any recommendations for minimum shutter speed or aperture (F8?) to make sure everything is sharp?.

We will be going in the late afternoon from 4-5PM..

Thanks!..

I've never been in a helicoper but if there are are strong vibrations switch VR to active. But surely there won't be as much vibration as in a moving car which active is really for..

Not sure how light it will be, if your shutter speed gets fast enough VR won't be needed at all. Though I assume that lens needs stopping down a bit..

Helicopters have a great deal of vibration, smaller ones especially. Select higher ISO to permit a fast shutter speed to be used and also bring a haze filter..

You'll figure it out yourself really fast, but don't touch the windows or walls of the helicopter, neither with your camera or your upper body. Let your spine damp out as much vibration as possible too..

We toured the island of Kauai by helicopter. If you go, do yourself a favor and spend the time and money to do it. I forgot my polarizing filter; that's one thing I would do / will do differently next time. I bumped the ISO up for faster shutter speeds. What they tell you when you sign up for the tour is not to wear or bring light / bright colored clothing or objects into the copter, as the reflection on the windows will spoil the view and your pictures. Of course one of the morons in our group brought her yellow jacket and didn't even wear it.

That being said, here's a few:.

Also - Be sure your batteries are fully charged, memory card is ready, and your camera settings are set..

Thanks all for the great advice and great Hawaii pics!!! They will be taking the doors off for us so I won't have to worry about a window. I'll be sure to up the ISO. How high should I go without having to worry about too much noise?.

Thanks again!..

One last question... do you think it'd be worth renting a 12-24mm Nikkor lens (though it doesn't have VR) or would 18mm be sufficient? I just don't want to have to switch lenses constantly in case I want to zoom in on something...
