Photography - Hobby vs Money Maker?
Just wondering if any of you use your photos or your photography skills to earn some type of money? I was thinking of attempting to earn a bit of a secondary income from doing some photography (obviously I need some courses and lots more practice)...Just wondering how hard is it for someone to make a bit of $$$ by selling their products or skills?.

(I know this is a very general / broad question...just looking to start some dialogue).

Thanks in advance!.

SOmeone here on the dpr Forums has an appropriate quote at the bottom of his posts:.

"Photography is an expensive hobby and a poor business.".

Don't quit your day job....

I know about a half a dozen pro's. Mostly doing weddings and events, two also do fine arts photo's. One of the fine arts photographers has a business doing custom work, mostly restorations of old photo's. The rest have either moved on or are trying to..

I don't live in a major metro area but these photographers are good. They are capable of always coming away with the shots needed..

I think some people on these forums pick up a few bucks in spare cash by selling to stock agencies. I have no idea nor desire to know how that works..

The pro forum is probably a better place to ask this question..

PS: I certainly doesn't look like easy money to me...

It is NOT easy money. I do mostly magazine photography, which accounts for maybe 60-65% of my income (writing makes up the rest of the income). My particular field is difficult to break into, and hard to stay current in, and doesn't really pay all that well. My guess is that for someone not willing or able to devote full time to the business (and who doesn't really want to remember it IS a business), something like microstock might work out. But from what I've seen of amateurs clinging to the various edges of pro photography, you'll be doing well to cover a small portion of the cost of your equipment..

Photography is my hobby. I've managed to sell two photos to a company that makes postcards, mostly for birthdays or cards with christian messages..

It didn't bring in that much money but still- it's fun to see "my" postcards in stores and it paid one of my filters .

Photography is a very tough business to make a living in.especially full time!.

I know.I did it for over 25 years!.

What I found was that I spent 20% of my time taking photos and 80% of my time running the business..

That being said.be prepared not to get rich..

In this day and age, everyone with a DSLR thinks they are a 'pro', which has brought prices down big time!.
