Photo organizing
I'm sure this is an over hashed topic but what software do you guys like for keeping your photos organized and for viewing? I'd like something easy yet full featured. I'd like to be able to make slide shows and ad music yet retain full image quality. (Not mpeg) I downloaded a trial version of ACDSee Pro and it seems OK but I'd like to hear what most of you are using, I know there are lots of 'em. Thanks...

I recommend having a look at IrfanView - it's free, it creates thumbnail pages, it has some (limited) abilities to do edits (colour, contrast, etc., although it won't replace a full-featured photo editor), has a pretty good slideshow capability - all pictires in a folder, or only selected images. I've tried lots of others and still keep using IrfanView over and over. Check it out at www.irfanview.com, Tucows or multiple other sites...

I would concur with Savage. Although my 18 year old daughter uses it more than me. Try it, you might like it.

Picasa is great as well for checking your pics quickly, making slideshows (esp. for burning on CD for others).

But dont think this or irfan add music ... I'm curious how people organise large amounts of photos ~ Ive read somewhere (here I think) that even the majority of pros dont use database software. Havent looked at any software in a while (& I know theres new stuff being developed, but more aimed at pros) but most "Organising-ware" Ive seen seemed to me more work than it was worth. Personally Im just dating folders YY_MM_DD so they list in sequence which has been fine for me cause till now I mostly photo landscapes, but, now Im starting to spread my photo wings a bit subjectwise, Im starting to wonder ...

IS THERE ANOTHER WAY ??!..

Thanks guys. I used Irfan briefly a long time ago. I want more of a full featured program though. Still haven't decided which I am going to use. One time I'll download the pics on one program and then another time on another program. I need to find one a stick with it...

I have used Adobe Photoshop album version 2 for the past three or four years and I have been quiet satisfied. I also built and maintain a U.S.Navy Destroyer website that fellow shipmates are constantly sending me photographs as well as digital family photos that we take quite often. I currently have over 7000 photos in the program separated by numerous tabs. Over the years I've used a number of different Digital Cameras. I'm currently using a Canon SD450, that due to it's small size, I'm very pleased with it...

Benson, for me I like Picasa as the organizing & viewing software, and most of my editing is done using it too. It never overwrites the original file, and you have two choices as to how to create a new file. You can export them into a new folder, or save the edits in a new file using a -1 name extension in the original folder. It is a very handy program to burn gift CDs, with a slide show if wanted, as well as back up your photos. I don't think it can add music though, but haven't tried nor read the on line manual to see if is a feature. Free program, worth a look, www.picasa.com.

The other program I use to create CDs or DVDs as slideshows does allow music to be added, and does way more, but I use it so little for that I need to read the manual again each time. Roxio Easy Media Creator 7.5, which I know has a newer version. It doesn't organize your hard drive like Picasa, but does allow editing / enhancing...
