Pentax K200D vs. Canon EOS D450 xsi
Entdoc.

Hi, I am relatively inexperienced amateur looking to upgrade to DSLR from my Canon EOS elan 7E film camera that has been collecting dust for the last few years. I was initially planning to stick with Canon but want to consider all options..

The local camera store chain is pushing Pentax and they are high on the K200D. It seems like a nice camera and feels more comfortable/substantial in my hands. I like the weatherseal aspect also. I wonder if they are getting higher comissions for selling Pentax however..

The Canon EOS D450 xsi seems like a great camera on paper but feels less solid in my hands..

I am confused about the pros/cons re. in-camera anti-shake vs. in-lens image stabilization..

I would really like some help to sort this stuff out. I'm not opposed to considering Nikon or others..

Thanks!..

You cannot really go wrong with any of the entry level DSLRs. If the Pentax felt better in your hand then this is what you should buy...

I got the Pentax K200D last week and it feels great in my hands as well, I'd definitely recommend it, it is a great camera and the kit lens is very good as well..

First if the Pentax feels better then go with it. All the DSLRs can take great pictures once you learn the camera..

As far as in camera vs lens IS pros and cons. I have the Oly E510 and it has in camera IS..

In camera IS will give you image stailization across all lenses. e.g. you pay for it once. You can use older manual lenses and still have IS..

In lens IS will allow you to see the stabilization through the view finder. IS lenses tend to be more expensive then an equal lens without IS (e.g. you get to pay for it every time you get a new lens.) Some folks have said in lens is better overall with long lenses but I have no way to compare and but it makes sense; but how much I can't say. My in camera IS works fine for me..

Look at what you will be shooting. If you are shooting sports, or birds, etc and use a long lens and lower shutter speeds IS is great to have. If you are just doing snapshots of the kids in the back yard you may never need it..

Here is an example of IS in action (this was just a quick test I did and is not supposed to be a quality shot, just and IS Test. I couldn't back up far enough with a 300mm manual lens to get a really sharp focus)..

IS OFF.

I plan to take vacation and family photos. I am definitely interested in learning more about photography as a hobby, but don't anticipate becoming more involved than that..

Thanks for the input thus far!.

BTW your gallery of photos is great!..

Honestly for now, I would go tohttp://www.pentaxforums. com and grab a used K100D super for about $300 and throw on a Tamron 18-250 and go from there..
