Pentax K10D or Sony DSLR-A100
I am not new to photography but due to personal circumstances I have not been able to afford a "proper" SLR since my Olympus OM4Ti was old off!.

I have narrowed my shortlist down to the Pentax K10D, The Sony A100 and possibly the Canon 400D (I am unsure about Penta Mirrors their brightness / dust attracting properties I feel could be an issue)..

Does anyone have a view as to which is the best system? and just what lenses will actualy work with the Sony / Pentax..

Well of those 2 I would go for the Pentax - but is there a reason you're excluding Nikon and Canon? Antishake body maybe, though Nikon and Canon have much better lens ranges..

Hi Alex,Thanks for your reply..

I ruled out Nikon D80 on two counts, 1. No Anti Shake. 2. No Sensor dust removal. 3.Cost a fair percentage of this camera's cost goes on advertising not quality, and I am not convinced that their "budget" kit is that much better than lower priced competition..

I only partialy ruled out the Canon 400D this was due to it not having a proper penta prism, a 5 times reflecting mirror must lose brightness / definition and it is 5 more surfaces to attract dust ( this also a concern with the SONY) Plus yet again I am certain that the quality of their "budget" kit is not reflected in the price, again we are paying for a collosal advertising budget..

I know I sound like a crank and I am aware that all businesses have to spend on advertising (I do!) but when we see how much the big two spend to convince us they are the only people who can build a camera? and lets face it we are paying for it..

I like the sound of the Pentax almost all of picture making is done at windswept motorsports venues, Airshows, and camping so I prize weather and dust proofing & in camera SR highly..

I think Pentax can offer me most of what I want in lens range, there are plenty of auto manual lenses out there and I think a few good prime lens's with one good zoom is the way I think I want to go, and Pentax can certainly offer me that. Are there any areas that in your opinion Canon is superior in lens range?.

The Sony got on the list on the basis it is very similar to the Pentax in feature but it offers access to the very fine Minolta optics range. But it does lack the weather proofing and a prism..

InCamera SR is a must I am getting a bit wobbly! and Dust removal is essential if I am going the Prime lens route...

Get the K10D. The A100 is a different (lower) class of dSLR. Hurry! Pentax is fixin' to raise prices...Hoya says that they are under-priced..

Dust removal systems don't really do much...more of an advertising gimmick. Dust on a pentamirror is not visible...unless it falls off..

Don't forget: Canon and Nikon sell a hell of a lot more DSLR cameras than Pentax and Sony do, so they have much bigger budgets for their marketing campaigns. ON the other hand, because of the larger numbers, their R&D investments can be split over much more sold units, so the uplift per camera for R&D is probably lower. Bottom line is - don't let your decision depend on this, just choose the camera that best suits your need within your budget..

From what you're writing, I'd say you're already leaning towards the K10D. Sure, the Sony opens the way to all that nice Minolta glass, but Pentax have some very nice lenses as well!.

Have you already been in a shop and had both in your hands?..

Hi Thanks for the reply and fiar point on budgets v sales, Tried the 400D and the D80 in a shop and liked the D80 better but no SR or Dust removal at that price!, I am trying the K10D against the 400D tonight. I will only be buying a body as from what I have seen so far kit lens's are not realy what I want..

Your right I am leaning more and more toward the Pentax it seems to offer everything I need at a good price, but if it dont feel right in the hand then I guess it's back to evaluating the options further!..

K10D is better (has more pro like features) from any camera from your list..

It's closer to Nikon D200/future D300, Canon 30D/40D and Sony A700..

It's compatible with many excellent Pentax lenses including old primes and new Limited series..

(I'm minoltian).

Thanks for looking and commenting. There are wonderful photo opportunities every where you go..

I am begining to think it's the Pentax as well..

Note that I'm not a Pentax owner, but I'm a fan. I'm saving up for a D300 now. If I didn't have a bunch of Nikkor glass, I'd get the K10D. I think you will like it....

I spent over a month reading every review ever written on Pentax, Sony, Cannon, Nikon and Olympus. I spent time on this forum reading every thing I could find. I to narrowed it down to Sony and Pentax. I went with the K10 with the 18-55 Kit Lense and I have added a Tamron 70-300. I'll add a tele-converter next and will have a nice basic system for about $1,300.00. The Pentax is superb.

The Pentax is solid and the weather proofing is a big item for me. I waterfoul and deer hunt and am outdoors most of the time..

Both cameras take good quality pictures and have enough features to keep you busy for monthe learning all of the features..

Hope this helps...

I've got the K10D: he will be happy with it. It's a tremendous camera, especially for the money..
