Ouch
I thought my Home Theater was a big money sinkhole, but photography! I just bought my Rebel XSi on Saturday with the 18-55 kit lens, and today I got the Canon 17-85 IS USM .

I blame DPreview .

Ok, now I actually have to start taking some pictures..

No, seriously, thank you to whoever runs this site, hugely helpful...

Try to feel your way into what aspect of photography really grabs you, then concentrate your lens buying in that venue. For example, macro is fun and challenging and you'll need a wee bit of gear. Or shooting birds is definitely fun and a learning experience. If you go slow, you should be able to avoid the purchase of some lenses you'll regret latter, but then, why should you be and different from us - many have lenses they wish they had never bought..

Enjoy the hobby. Yes it is expensive; do you have filters, tripod, flash, more lenses, reflectors, strobes, backdrops......?Rationally I have no hope, irrationally I believe in miracles.Joni Mitchell..

Been there, done that .

I succumbed to lens lust and wasted a lot of money on lenses that I ended up selling (at a loss)..

My suggestions:.

* try with what you have and decide if you like more wide, normal, tele focal lengths, if you like macro and low light photography.

* once you've decide you want a lens of a certain speed and focal length, best to wait and save for the best model you can afford rather than buying a cheap one as a stop-gap measure: it's mostly wasted money, you know you'll want the better one soon .

* if you have a cropped DSLR, decide if you'll want to move to FF soon and, if yes, buy lenses that will work on a FF body.

Ciao!Roberto.

Ha ha. Same here. I spend more money for equipts than spend time taking pictures. You are right. Blame PDR. Every time I read a threat I run to the store.

First D80 with kit len then top up for 18-200. and SB800 is needed. Again Sigma 10-20 so beautiful image posted so I run to the bank. Then someone told me 50mm 1.8 is cheap and sharp good for the beginner. Oh that is suitable for me.

NOWI dont need to stop buying. Just stop reading DPreview. Just Kidding. This is the best site I have found for self taught photographer. Thanks all who contribute and sharing their knowledge and valuable experience..

OOPSOS'Photographing is about feel of view, not field of view'..

You're just getting started. I could retire several times for the value of all the photographic equipment I've purchased since my first Pentax in 1959. I moved to Nikon in 1969 and have always had a case of NAS (Nikon Aquisition Syndrome)..

If you keep on, you'll be spending on things like a $1100 Gitzo tripod with Markins ball head and plates. How about a nice 500 f4 for bird shots. heheheh.

Have fun. Remember, the guy who dies with the most toys wins. And, you can never own enough photographic equipment or fishing reels...
