Opinions about Canon G6 or Canon PowerShot Pro 1
What is the best camera to use for photographing jewelry? I am looking at a Canon G6 has anyone used this camera and what are your thoughts about it? Also, it is listed as a 7.1 megapixel, but is it a true 7.1 megapixel? How about a Canon PowerShot Pro 1 Thanks,..

Hi.

I have done Jewellery Photograpy earlier this year with my Canon G2 + Close up lens using the tube adapter. See some samples.

I think Canon G6 is good enough for the job + you can spare money for additional Equipment like flash and closeup lenses. I hope this helps. if you have furthur questions then feel free to ask. Thanks.

Thanks, Leo. These are very good quality images and will really help me in my decision. Currently, Im using a Minolta RD3000 and the quality just is not there. Im also using a MK 1012 Digital Light Box. Do you have any experience with these or have a particular system you would recommend? Thank you so much for your help already!..

Hi.

Thanks for appreciating. Actually I was under a Shoe-String Budget. < $100. Mostly it was just for fun.

I never used a readymade lightbox. I just used a WHITE CANVAS paper shaped in a RECTANGULAR U shape and inverted on top of the product. I used 2 cheap table top lights from both sides. But this setup is too much time consuming as you have to take a lot of shots. On the other hand if you have a professional Light box then it could save you a lot of time. I see no reason a G6 shouldnt be able to handle a job like that. I had aG5 and took lots of real close up shots of varying subjects with stunning results...

Have you considered the Olympus C8080. The macro shots are great. You can see samples at.

Http://www.pbase.com/cameras/olympus/c8080wz The reviews on the Canon PowerShot Pro 1 are reasonable but it suffers from the following: - 7x Optical Zoom compared to the Nikon 10x.

- Vignetting (shading in the corners) at max aperture.

- Visible noise from ISO 100 upwards.

- Long CF write times for Super-Fine images (4.8 sec).

- Poor automatic white balance in artificial light.

- No AF assist lamp.

- Disappointing battery life - camera bug?.

- Poor automatic white balance in artificial light.

- USB 1.1 not USB 2.0 Regards.

Another problem I have found with the Canon PowerShot Pro 1 is that it is very slow to auto focus. It is particularly bad in low light conditions. The Canon G6 menu system is very responsive and even quicker to navigate around than the Pro 1. Note that the G6 is a newer release from Canon. The Canon G6 is also noticably lighter in weight than the Pro 1. I noticed that the motor on the Pro 1 is noisy compared say to the Olympus C-8080 which I recommended earlier for you to look at.

I have been informed that the slow auto focus issues have been addressed in a new firmware upgrade for the Canon PowerShot Pro 1...
