Only jpeg thumbnails in Windows Explorer?
Now that I have a growing number of non-jpeg images, Windows Explorer is becoming a pain because thumbnails are only for jpegs. It certainly recognizes bitmap, psd, and raw as files, but shows no thumbnails. (I do also use Picasa, PSE5.0 and lightroom, but sometimes there's nothing better than going right to the source... Windows Explorer... such as when reorganizing folders.).

So, is there anyway to get Windows Explorer to show thumbnails of images other than jpeg?.

Thanks..

There is a download for Windows XP to display Raw files but I don't have a link. Try doing a search on the Microsoft site.Chris R..

Windows Vista shows thumbnails for all recognized image formats, including Nikon/Canon RAW files and DNG files..

You download the codec for the file format and it applies to the entire OS...

I don't have VISTA and it does not surprise me that VISTA has this capability..

How about XP Professional?.

Warning: requires registry edit. back up registry first..

There are similar registry hacks to create thumbnails for other image and video formats. search google.to view PSD thumbnails with windows XP explorer:http://www.josh.biz/tech/6-view_psd_thumbnails.html..

Thanks for the advice and thoughts. Picasa seems to be a reasonable subsitute for Widows Explorer, plus gives me a histogram to look at..

You can download and install a codec from Canon that will show you RAW thumbnails in Windows Explorer and also the full images in Photo Gallery. There's one for Nikon and DNG as well..

On the Canon codec below there's a Windows XP option. Dunno if that will make XP work the same way..

I've been quite content with Picasa and all that this freelittle utility from the good folks at Google have to offer..

Manages all of my photos, allows for some quick croppingand simple editing of images and, will allow me to drag anddrop my videos, along with the jpeg images direct from the card,in order to be viewed without having to use theobligatory "Quicktime" software that Panasonic uses..

I find that scrolling through my library of images to be a lotfaster when compared with Explorer..

ThanksKim.

Shoot first and ask questions later!..

Thanks. Actually, Adobe Labs has a .dng codec on their website, and it works ok. It's a bit slow, but now my DNG's show up fine..
