Oly E-510 as First DSLR
Will the Olympus E-510 be a good camera for a beginner? Ignoring price, is there anything else you would recommend? I do like the fact that it has a live preview in the LCD, as that will make the transition from P/S to SLR much easier on me. I went to my local camera shop and the Oly was recommended. Let me know your opinions. Thanks..

1- Ergonomics matters, and is pretty personal. Handle it, if possible, and see if you like the control layout, viewfinder and balance..

2- Regarding LiveView, be aware that.

(a) it's an either-or it's a button press to choose between LiveView on LCD and the OVF, because the mirror needs to be up for the former and down for the latter.

(b) there's going to be extra shutter lag in LiveView mode, because with the way the shutter and mirror mechanism was designed, the mirror needs to go down, then up again.

(c) there's no contrast-detection AF, so if you want to use AF, it'll do phase-detection AF by again bouncing the mirror.

(d) LCD (as with, somewhat bizarrely, almost every LiveView DSLR) is fixed to the back of the camera no tilting or swiveling.

It might be most useful for shooting on a tripod (or macro focusing rails combine with zooming-in for manual focus), unless you're a very steady shooter..

Unless you have somewhat unusual-for-a-beginner needs, like a burning desire to shoot in the rain with an unprotected camera, or to have many AF points scattered across the frame, it and an appropriate lens, if need be (like a dedicated macro lens, if you're going to be really into that) will probably be capable...

Hi there.

I've had the e-510 for a couple of months now and it is my first DLSR. I was also attracted to the live view feature but I find that I actually don't use it very often (but the times that I did it saved me from lying in the mud). It is very different to the live view of P&S cameras so make sure you try it out first. It's a great camera though and I'm really happy with it..

Good luck in finding your first DSLR.Danielle..

I have had my E510 for a couple of days and it is my first DSLR. I upgraded from the Sony H9. It's like night and day shooting with the 510. I used liveview extensively in the framing of this picture:.

And it's even better (liveview) with the E-3 and it's swivel screen ...re.

It has many things going for it, but the poor, narrow, viewfinder compared to Nikon or Canon must count heavily against it. See if it matters to you by looking through all three in a store..

The 510 is an excellent first camera. I think you will like it very much. Do not think that you will use Live View like you do on a Point and Shoot. You will not. Any DSLR is much heavier then a P&S and you will find it very difficult to hold it steady while looking at the lcd and taking a picture..

Plan on learning how to use a DSLR, a view finder, changing lenses, dealing with other issues that you have not had the opportunity to explore on a P&S..

The Oly kit lenses are the best in the business. I think that you will find using the 510 fun and very different than a P&S but you will be pleased with the results..
