First I'd suggest you ask in the Nikon Lens forum..

Second I you need to be more explicit about which new lens you mean..

I'd suggest you use two websites, photozone.de and photodo.com, to get an idea of lens performance. A very quick glance suggest people liked the old 35-70, but you need to be careful about version - there can different lenses with similar designations..

You might also consider the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 macro..

35-70mm doesn't cover the same range. On an APS-C DSLR, 35mm gives you a field of view similar to a 50mm lens on a 35mm camera. So you have no wide angle with this zoom..

I know that the ranges are different in both lenses, what I want to know is wether the superior glass ( 2.8 the whole range) is an advantage over the newer technics and what is left of this superiority considering you need to put the diafragme on the highest number in order for it to work on a digital camera..

OK, but that's pretty important..

The 35-70mm was a high-end lens and performs very well. However the 18-70mm is no slouch, and most of it's problems are at 18mm..

Putting the diaphragm on the highest number on the 35-70mm allows the camera body to select the aperture. The entire range, from f/2.8 to f/22, is available for you to use..
