Not sure if this has been asked before ??? dSLR prime ..no dSLR here yet
I am just wondering about how prime lenses work ? I know they have a fixed mm and aperture ? .

However, in practice, could we actually change it to a narrower aperture ? Does the number of aperture distate the lowest possible ???.

For example, 50mm 1/1.8 II prime lens, could this lens be used to get a greater DOF with increasing the number of the aperture ???.

I am kinda understanding how Canon S3 works now, however I think dSLR works a bit differently if I am not mistaken ????.

A prime lens is a fixed focal length lens. The aperture is not fixed..

The stated aperture on a lens is it's largest (smallest number) aperture. A lens might be a 60mm f2.8. 2.8 would be the largest aperture the lens is capable of while F32 might be the smallest aperture it can do...

Understanding focal lengths (Focal Length Compression)http://www.tamroneurope.com/flc.htm.

The Basicshttp://www.pbase.com/otfchallenge/the_basics.

This is super handy pagehttp://www.photonhead.com/exposure/simcam.php.

Look at teh image on teh left, See how much of it is clearly descernable(viewable).

Now , change the aperture. See how adjusting teh aperture changes the image(Brighter or Darker? Is more of teh picture in focus OR Did it get blurrier?).

Now, leave aperture alone & change the shutter speed. See how that affects the image..

Have fun and really take the time to study the new image on teh right, each and eerytime you make a change..

Good Luck!.
