I love the way the D80 feels and works, but I'd definitely wait to see what they do with the D90. I'd pick up a D40 in the near term, then sell it and upgrade to the D90 when it comes out. I don't think the resale value of the D40 will drop as much as the D80's when the D90 finally does hit...
Right now I think the D60 is the better bang-for-buck. Read what they do do you need a D80? What do you plan to shoot?..

I'm curious as to why you feel the D60 is a better bang for the buck then the D80? I certainly think for $100.00 more the D80 is worth it, there shouldn't be any doubt ).

I'd get a D80 right now. If you're always waiting for the new replacement, you'll never get around to enjoying photography..
The D80 is a superb tool with a beautiful glass penta-prism providing a big bright viewfinder. It's got a huge feature set..
D80 prices are really down right now and make it a compelling choice. The D90, when it finally arrives, will be considerably more expensive, I believe. I purchased my D80 last year for $1299 with the wonderful 18-135 kit lens. It's come way down in price now, but I got to use it for a year. No regrets...
Buy a tested product, one that is out and any issues are known, and hopefully, resolved..
There is always going to be a more spectacular camera, just around the corner..

The D80 will autofocus with several lenses that will not autofocus with the D40 or D60. Among them are the 50mm and 85mm primes (both f/1.4 and f/1.8). The f/1.8 versions of those primes are real bargains and very, very good lenses. The f/1.4 versions are more expensive, and are great lenses. If you want to be able to use AF with an screw drive lens, then go for the D80..
The D80 also has a much nicer autofocus system (more focus sensors; same as the D200) than the D60 or D40.Good shooting,.
