Nikon 40x or Olympus E-410
I have decieded to purchase my first DSLR. There are currently good deals on the Olympus E-410 and Nikon 40x twin lens kits. I will use them for general photography and a lot of travel. Can anyone help me decide? I like the smallness of the Olympus but the build quality of the Nikon. I'm told the lenses of the Nikon are superior. The Nikon kit is about $200 more. Any help would be appreciated...

Among the two: Nikon D40x with twin lens kit - Good lenses, AF assist lamp, wider DR, less noise, ISO3200 option..

The Olympus kit lenses are better than the Nikon kit lenses every day of the week. You were being told otherwise by someone with no knowledge of the Oly setup, a clear bias or both..

From dpreview e510 review.

"The results from the kit lens are some of the best we've ever seen,".

You get the same kit lenses in the 410 kit that come with the e510 that is referenced above..

10mp vs 6mp for less money is a very good thing..

You can't go really wrong with either but I'd keep the $200 difference in my pocket or use it to get a fl36 flash and a CF card to complete the kit and you'll find yourself a very happy Oly shooter..

Oly even has introduced a 28mm pancake lens to make the kit even smaller if you are interested. the other consideration might be the e420, the updated e410. read a bit about it as may also serve you well and be available at a price that may not be much more than the d40..

If you like the Oly buy the Oly, less money, 4mp more and better kit lenses would sway me. The DR talk around here about Oly is FUD in real world use. they both will take great pictures but I'd go Oly given your post..

E1 w/ grip, e510, e300 w/ grip, 8mm FE, 14-54mm, 35mm, 50mm, 40-150mm,50-200mm, fl-50, fuji - 6800..

There are downsides to the Olympus, as there is with Nikon or any other system..

However, lens quality is NOT one of them. Nikon are also good here, so I'd say you shouldn't let lens quality sway you either way here.http://flickr.com/photos/iskender..
