Newbie Lens question?
Suppose I have a newer lens with built in AF motor (like the 18-55 VR included with the D60 kit)......can this lens be used with a camera like the D80 which has the AF motor in the body? If so, what would be the settings on the lens and the settings on the body be (for a camera like the D80)? I am asking this cause I am seriously considering purchasing the D60 with the 18-55 VR and 55-200 VR as my first DSLR. If/when the D90 comes out (or another Nikon in the future) I may want to upgrade. If newer Nikon bodies are released in the future with the AF motor on the body I am wondering if my current D60 lens setup would work with newer bodies. I know that certain lenses will not AF with the D60 but I need to try to figure out what the future will likely hold for lenses I purchase now. Thank you for any hell!!!..

If you have a lens with a built in motor and a D60 you attach the lens and go take pictures!!! No settings past flicking the switch off Manual..

Ok - so will the D60 lens with AF work with the D80 (which has AF motor on the body and not on the lens)? Provided that the D60 lens will work on the D80 - what are the focus settings on the D80 body and the lens from the D60?..

The kit lenses that your are considering with the D60 have what is called the "AF-S" focusing mechanism. This means that the focusing motor is on board the lens..

For auto focusing to work on the D60 or D40 you must have an AFS lensno exceptions. Fortunately Nikon is only introducing AF-S lenses and the choices are numerousfrom the entry level lenses you're considering to pro grade..

The D80, D90 to be, D300 ect. also have an in-camera focusing motor for "slot-drive" lenses. Slot-drive lenses are by definition not AF-S lenses and will not auto focus on the D60. Cameras with a slot drive will auto focus with both AF-S and non-AF-S auto focusing lenses..

If you are considering a slot-drive auto focus lens then you should consider a body other than the D60; however, the AF-S line-up is impressive and getting better all the time. You'll have plenty of options if you purchase the D60.

Thank you! I am really only concerned when I would upgrade from the D60 to a a future model or something similar to the D80.....whether or not a AF-S lens would auto focus with a camera like the D80 or one which had in-camera focusing. This being the case, and using the D80 with in-camera focusing as an example, what would the focus setting on the D80 be and what would be the setting on the AF-S lens be (would both be set to AF)?..

Pretty ironic typo for the responses you've been getting to your repetitive questions about the D40/D60/D80  .

That gift certificate you mentioned having (in one of your threads), limiting you to the D60 or D80... where is it from ?Couldn't they answer most of your questions ?Questions like this one are pretty basic..

I'm not insulting you or complaining.. just wondering what kind of service you're getting from the salespeople..

ANY lens that will work on the D60 will definitely work on other Nikon DSLRs..

Bonus being... the ones that won't autofocus or meter on the D60... will... on the other Nikons you would upgrade to..

Bring on the next question !..
