newbie help
Hi all. This is my first post here on this terrific site. So here go's....

I'm getting into photography and would like some opinions on a few things. I plan on taking photos of several different things (people, scenery, landscapes, nature, wildlife, etc...). I've narrowed my 2 camera choices down to either the Canon EOS 40D, or the Rebel XTi..

What are the major differences between the 2 (besides the price)? Should I get the Rebel XTi and with the money saved, get more/better lenses? Or should I get the 40D with one basic high quality lens, and work my way up to more lenses?.

Also, what might be the best high quality lens to start off with if I were only to get one at the start?.

Opinions?.

Thank you in advance..

Hallo,I own a Canon 20D..

My first point on your question is, that also the 20D ist older than both cameras you selected most of my pictuers would not be better with either of them, both are good cameras and it really depends how much money you like to spend. On digital SLR it is a good idea to spend more money on the lens or a flash than the body..

Related to the Rebel be aware that there is a very big chance that a new version will be announced at the end of january. This is the usual timing for this line. The 40D will get an update in about one year (if Canon keeps erverything like it was in the past which only Canon knows).

Personally I would spend more money on the lenses than the body..

As you wrote above you will take pictures of very differnt things. So you will need different lenses for this, there is no perfect lens, especially for different things. For people you could use a prime or a 2.8 lens. For wildlife you will need a long lensOptions are, e.g.:18-55 + 55-250 + 50/1.810-22 + 17-55 2.8 + 70-20017-85....

It really depends on how much money you like to spend in the beginning, how many kg you will like to carry around, how much time you will invest in improving your skills. As I understand your current skills, just start with one lens (18-55 or 17-55/2.8 or 17-85) and maybe one prime 50/1.8 and then spend more money later when you understand what you need most..

For only one lens with best quality I would recommend the 17-55/2.8 plus a flash (the in body flash is not high enough as this lens is quite big)..

40D has Better view-finder, speed, spot metering, built, handling, ISO3200 option..

XTi + better lens makes more sense as bodies get upgraded sooner..

I agree with most points, only the lens will limit you to a minimum of f4.0. So either invest in the 17-55/2.8 or a prime, e.g. 50mm to learn what you can achieve with small DOF (looks nice for portraits). A 50/1.8 will do as it is cheap, also if money is not the limitation you can also get a 1.4 or 1.2L...

Being new I'd recommend the XTi body only which will offer great results and reserve the money saved for quality glass. Later if you wish you can upgrade to the next level and still get a good resale on the XTi..

My two lens recommendations would be the Tamron 17-50f2.8 and the 70-200 f4L IS. The whole package should be around $1700.

I've said it before and I'm saying it again...

If you're staring off and you need to ask what quality lens you should get you can't know enough to make effective use of it..

Get the xTi and it's basic kit lens and learn to use them..

When you actually know what you need from a lens then you will be ready to get one..

Quality lenses are expensive and you are likely to end up with a lens that does not do the job you want. They are designed to fit particular functional requirements..

I'll repeat that :.

Get the xTi and it's basic kit lens and learn to use them..

For the first year the most likely fault with your shots will NOT be the lens, it will be you..
