New grandparent needs camera advice!
I am in the market for a new P&S compact camera mostly used to take pictures of my grandchildren. I enjoy taking pictures and would like to learn more and will be taking a class on digital photography starting in Nov. I have owned a Canon Powershot (dropped and broken) and a Sony DSC-W50 (gotten wet and broken). I am looking for recommendations for a camera that is relatively fast at taking pictures - these kids move fast!.

The only recommendation I've received so far is from a camera salesman who rec the Olympus 790SW but since it is new there is only one comment on it (and it is negative).I would appreciate any input! Thanks! Gail..

For kids, you may consider buying Fuji F31fd, which is fast focusing and has low shutter lag. It is best low light performer too..

Among others, I would recommend a camera with optical viewfinder (for live tracking of kids while camera takes time to focus and adjust exposure). e.g. Canon A710IS, Canon A570IS, A640/630, A560/550, etc. in that order.Best Wishes, Ajayhttp://picasaweb.google.com/ajay0612..

Your intended subjects may suggest a digital SLR, particularly if you are looking to expand your interest in photography. A dSLR will perform well in terms of autofocus and shutter lag, essential when photographing fast moving kids..

Also low light performance and creative use of shallow depth of field (giving nicely blurred backgrounds) are available:.

All of the leading makers provide 'base' dSLRs which can be used in Auto mode but can also allow you to manually set shutterspeed, aperture, or both. These models would be the Nikon D40 or D40x, Canon 400D, Pentax K100D or K110D, or offerings from Sony and Olympus. All will be fine but sample each one and handle them in a store..

I'm sure the salesman was responding to "dropped and broken" and "wet and broken" when he recommended the Olympus 790 SW and it is shock-resistant (5' drop) and waterproof...

I agree with Ajay & add that if you can't find or afford the F31fd, an F20 will be just fine (less than $150USD). Any of the F-series will be ok, actually..

Dave.

PS or a DSLR of course, but thats a bigger undertaking both physically and financially. I've both and carry the F20 maybe ten times as often as I carry the DSLR. I carry the DSLR when my primary goal for an outing is photography & the F20 the rest of the time. Here's an F20 example of a grandchild event:..
